“ไปลา-มาไหว้” มารยาทไทยที่เป็นวัฒนธรรมการทักทาย เวลาพบปะกันหรือลาจากกัน “การไหว้” เป็นการแสดงถึงความมีสัมมาคารวะ และการให้เกียรติซึ่งกันและกัน นอกเหนือจากการกล่าวคำว่า “สวัสดี” ศาสตราจารย์ ดร.กาญจนา นาคสกุล ราชบัณฑิต ได้เคยเขียนเรื่องนี้ไว้ว่า คนไทยเป็นคนที่มีอุปนิสัยอ่อนน้อม มีสัมมาคารวะ การไหว้เป็นการแสดงความมีสัมมาคารวะอย่างหนึ่ง และเป็นธรรมเนียมการทักทายและแสดงความเคารพ เมื่อจะไปโรงเรียนและเมื่อกลับจากโรงเรียนมาถึงบ้านลูกจะไหว้พ่อแม่ถ้ามีผู้ปกครองก็ไหว้ผู้ปกครอง เมื่อไปถึงโรงเรียนและเมื่อกลับจากโรงเรียนเด็กจะไหว้ครู การไหว้ทำให้ผู้ใหญ่รักและเอ็นดู คนที่พบเห็นก็ชื่นชม ในภาษาไทยมีคำกล่าวถึงผู้ที่มีสัมมาคารวะและได้รับการอบรมมรรยาทให้รู้จักไหว้ว่า รู้จัก “ไปลามาไหว้” หมายความว่า เมื่อมาถึงก็ ไหว้ เมื่อจะไปก็ลา

            “การไหว้”  เป็นภาษาท่าทางที่ใช้แสดงความเคารพ ทักทาย โดยการยกมือสองข้างประนม พร้อมกับยกขึ้นไหว้ในระดับต่างๆ นอกจากนี้ยังแสดงออกถึงความหมายของ การขอบคุณ การขอโทษ การยกย่อง การระลึกถึง และอีกหลายความหมายสุดแท้แต่โอกาส  การไหว้เป็นการแสดงมิตรภาพ มิตรไมตรี ที่เป็นขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณี เป็นวัฒนธรรมที่งดงาม รวมทั้งเป็นสิ่งที่แสดงถึงเอกลักษณ์ และเป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมของคนไทย ที่ปัจจุบันกำลังเลือนหายและถูกละเลยอย่างน่าเสียดาย ประเทศไทยซึ่งเคยได้ชื่อว่ามีวัฒนธรรมที่งดงามเป็นดินแดนแห่งรอยยิ้ม (Land of Smile) ที่ผู้คนรู้จักไปทั่วโลก กำลังสูญเสียสิ่งเหล่านี้ไป ทั้งที่การไหว้เป็นมารยาทแบบไทยๆ ที่เราคุ้นเคยกันมาตั้งแต่เด็ก  
 
            เมื่อพูดถึงเรื่องการไหว้ หลายคนคิดว่าเป็นเรื่องที่น่าเบื่อ ไม่ทันสมัย อายที่จะปฏิบัติ หรือไม่ก็กลัวว่าจะไหว้ผิดบ้าง กลัวถูกมองว่าประหลาดบ้าง แต่ในความเป็นจริงแล้วเรื่องของมารยาทไทยนั้นไม่มีคำว่าผิดหรือถูก มีแต่ความนุ่มนวล สวยงามหรือไม่เท่านั้น ดังนั้นวิธีการปฏิบัติจึงเป็นเพียงแนวทาง ที่ผู้ปฏิบัติสามารถนำไปปรับปรน ประยุกต์ใช้ให้เหมาะสมกับเวลาและสถานที่ ซึ่งแนวปฏิบัติในเรื่องของการไหว้นั้น กรมส่งเสริมวัฒนธรรม กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม ได้กำหนดระดับของการไหว้ไว้ ๓ ระดับ โดยใช้นิ้วหัวแม่มือและใบหน้าเป็นตัวกำหนดตำแหน่ง ดังนี้
 
            การไหว้ระดับที่ ๑ ใช้สำหรับไหว้พระรัตนตรัย ได้แก่ พระพุทธ พระธรรม พระสงฆ์ รวมถึงโบราณสถาน โบราณวัตถุทางพุทธศาสนา ในกรณีที่เราไม่สามารถกราบแบบเบญจางคประดิษฐ์ได้ โดยให้นิ้วหัวแม่มือจรดระหว่างคิ้ว นิ้วชี้สัมผัสส่วนบนของหน้าผาก นัยว่า พระรัตนตรัยเป็นสิ่งที่ควรเคารพอย่างสูงสุด จึงยกมือที่ประนมขึ้นให้สัมผัสส่วนที่สูงสุดของร่างกาย หรืออีกนัยหนึ่งว่าพระรัตนตรัยนั้นเป็นดวงแก้วมณีที่ประเสริฐ มีค่าสูง คอยกำกับและสอนให้เรามีสติมีปัญญาอยู่ตลอดเวลา จึงสมควรแก่การเคารพกราบไหว้ การไหว้ในระดับที่ ๑ นี้ จึงให้ยกมือที่ประนมขึ้นให้นิ้วหัวแม่มืออยู่ระหว่างคิ้วทั้งสองข้างนั่นเอง
