โครงงานหมายถึง กิจกรรมที่เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้เรียนได้ศึกษา ค้นคว้าและลงมือปฏิบัติด้วยตนเองตามความสามารถ ความถนัด และความสนใจ โดยอาศัยกระบวนการทางวิทยาศาสตร์ หรือกระบวนการอื่นใดไปใช้ในการศึกษาหาคำตอบในเรื่องนั้นๆ โดยมีครูผู้สอนคอยกระตุ้นแนะนำและให้คำปรึกษาแก่ผู้เรียนอย่างใกล้ชิด ตั้งแต่การเลือกหัวข้อที่จะศึกษา ค้นคว้า ดำเนินการ วางแผน กำหนดขั้นตอนการดำเนินงาน โดยทั่วๆ ไป การทำโครงงานสามารถทำได้ทุกระดับการศึกษา ซึ่งอาจทำเป็นรายบุคคลหรือเป็นกลุ่มก็ได้ ทั้งนี้ขึ้นอยู่กับลักษณะของโครงงาน อาจเป็นโครงงานเล็กๆ ที่ไม่ยุ่งยากซับซ้อนหรือเป็นโครงงานใหญ่ที่มีความยากและซับซ้อนขึ้นก็ได้
