ประวัติของเครื่องพิมพ์ดีด

เครื่องพิมพ์ดีดเครื่องแรกเป็นแบบภาษาอังกฤษจดทะเบียนสิทธิบัตรเมื่อ พ.ศ.2237 ณ ประเทศอังกฤษ โดยวิศวกรชื่อเฮนรี่ มิล โดยใช้ชื่อว่า Writig Machine ต่อจากนั้นนายวิลเลี่ยม ออสตินเบิท ชาวอเมริกันได้ประดิษฐ์เครื่องเขียนหนังสือใช้ชื่อว่า Typographer มีลักษณะเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมทำด้วยไม้ทั้งสิ้น

พ.ศ.2376 Progin ชาวฝรั่งเศส ได้ประดิษฐ์เครื่องเขียนหนังสือ สำหรับคนตาบอดเรียกว่า Ktypographic เครื่องนี้ประกอบด้วยที่รวมของแป้นอักษรเมื่อเคาะลงไปบนแป้นอักษรจะดีดก้านอักษรตีไปที่จุดศูนย์กลาง ซึ่งเป็นรูปแบบของเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดในปัจจุบัน

ในประเทศไทย

ในปี พ.ศ. 2467 พระอาจวิทยาคม ได้ปรึกษาและทำการค้นคว้ากับพนักงานบริษัท 2 คนคือ นายสวัสดิ์ มากประยูร และนายสุวรรณประเสริฐ (กิมเฮง) เกษมณี โดยนายสวัสดิ์ มากประยูร เป็นวิศวกรออกแบบประดิษฐ์ตัวอักษร นายสุวรรณประเสริฐ (กิมเฮง) เกษมณี ทำหน้าที่ฝ่ายวิชาการ ใช้เวลา 7 ปี ก็วางแป้นอักษรใหม่สำเร็จและเห็นว่าเหมาะสมที่สุด ใน พ.ศ. 2474 สามารถพิมพ์ได้ถนัดที่สุดและรวดเร็วที่สุด ให้ชื่อว่าแบบ “เกษมณี” และใช้มาจนถึงปัจจุบันนี้

ต่อมาได้มีผู้วิจัยพบว่า เครื่องพิมพ์ดีดแบบเกษมณี ยังมีข้อบกพร่องและคิดวางแป้นอักษรใหม่ ใช้ชื่อว่า “ปัตตะโชติ” และสภาวิจัยแห่งชาติตรวจสอบแล้วเห็นว่าเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดแบบปัตตะโชติ สามารถพิมพ์ได้เร็วกว่าแบบเดิมประมาณ 25.8% ในระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2508 – 2516 ทำให้วงการใช้เครื่องพิมพ์ดีดเกิดความสับสน คณะรัฐมนตรีลงมติให้หน่วยราชการที่ได้รับงบประมาณค่าเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดจัดซื้อเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดไทยแบบปัตตะโชติ หลังวันที่ 16 ตุลาคม 2516 มีการยกเลิกมติคณะรัฐมนตรีดังกล่าวและให้มีการจัดซื้อเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดเป็นไปตามความต้องการของผู้ใช้

ปัจจุบันเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดได้ถูกพัฒนาให้ก้าวหน้าด้วยเทคโนโลยีสมัยใหม่ สามารถพิมพ์ได้เร็ว น้ำหนักเบา เพราะใช้ระบบเครื่องไฟฟ้าและคอมพิวเตอร์โดยสามารถเก็บข้อมูลต่าง ๆ ที่พิมพ์ไว้ในเครื่องและสามารถสั่งให้เครื่องพิมพ์ข้อความเติมได้หลาย ๆ ฉบับ
