มีการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับกิจกรรมที่ทําของนักบริหารในแต่ละวันว่า มีความแตกต่างกันหรือไม่ซึ่งผลจากการศึกษาพบว่า นักบริหารที่ประสบความสําเร็จในหน้าที่การงานและได้รับการเลื่อนตําแหน่งอย่างรวดเร็ว จะให้ความสําคัญกับกิจกรรมที่ต่างไปจากนักบริหารที่มีประสิทธิผล ที่มีผลงานทั้งด้านปริมาณและคุณภาพเป็นไปตามเป้าหมาย และเป็นที่ชื่นชอบของผู้ใตบังคับบัญชา โดยการศึกษาของ Luthans และคณะ (Robbins, 2003) พบว่า กิจกรรมที่นักบริหารส่วนใหญทําสามารถแบ่งได้เป็น 4 ประเภท ได้แก่
