อำเภอบางพลี มีประเพณีอันดีงามสืบทอดมาถึงรุ่นลูกรุ่นหลาน โดยในวันขึ้น 13 ค่ำเดือน 11 ของทุกปี ชาวบางพลีช่วยกันเก็บดอกบัวรวบรวมไว้ที่วัดหลวงพ่อโต (วัดบางพลีใหญ่ใน) เพื่อมอบให้กับชาวรามัญ นำไปเป็นดอกไม้เป็นพุทธบูชาในวันออกพรรษา เมื่อใดที่ชาวรามัญมารับดอกบัว โดยใช้เรือเป็นพาหนะ พร้อมใจกันส่งเสียงร้องรำทำเพลงมาตามลำน้ำ เพิ่มความคึกคักสนุกสนานตลอดการเดินทาง เป็นงานบุญงานหนึ่งที่ชาวไทยและชาวมอญได้ยึดมั่นทำเป็นประจำทุกปี สืบทอดมาอย่างต่อเนื่องจนกลายเป็น "ประเพณีรับบัว" ประเพณีสำคัญประจำจังหวัดสมุทรปราการมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ที่มีการจัดงานอย่างยิ่งใหญ่ มีนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างชาติมาร่วมงานเป็นจำนวนมาก

สำหรับ “ประเพณีรับบัว” เริ่มต้นด้วยขั้นตอนเตรียมดอกบัวของชาวบ้านบางพลี โดยเอาดอกบัวหลายดอกเสียบไว้ในใบบัวแล้วเอาใบบัวห่อไว้เพื่อไม่ให้ดอกบัวเหี่ยว เมื่อถึงเวลาเย็นชาวตำบลต่าง ๆ ก็จะพากันไปยังตำบลบางพลีใหญ่ ช่วยกันพายเรือที่ ตกแต่งอย่างสวยงาม ซึ่งในตอนกลางคืนมีการจับคู่ ร้องเพลงเรือลำตัดตามแต่ถนัดฝ่ายชาวบ้านบางพลีใหญ่ ก็จะตกแต่งบ้านเรือนด้วยธง ทิวโคมบัว และเล่นจนถึงสว่างส่วนบริเวณที่เล่นคือคลองสำโรง และในตอนเช้าของวันรุ่งขึ้นในวันขึ้น 14 ค่ำเดือน 11 ก็จะมีการโยนบัวลงไปในขบวนเรือ ขบวนแห่พระพุทธรูปโดยอัญเชิญหลวงพ่อโตจำลองลงไว้ในเรือ โดยเรือจะแล่นไปตามคลองสำโรงเพื่อให้ประชาชนได้บูชา ซึ่งประชาชนจะโยนดอกบัวลงไปในเรือแห่หลวงพ่อโต และในเรือที่ชาวบ้านมาร่วมงาน
