การพัฒนาเมืองอุตสาหกรรมเชิงนิเวศในประเทศไทย ได้รับความสนใจอย่างกว้างขวาง โดยมีบทเรียนจากนิคมอุตสาหกรรมมาบตาพุด จังหวัดระยอง ทำให้ภาคอุตสาหกรรมหันมาให้ความสำคัญกับการประกอบกิจการที่สอดคล้องหรือส่งผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมและสังคมน้อยที่สุด หรือไม่ส่งผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมเลย รัฐบาลได้ให้ความสำคัญกับการพัฒนาเมืองอุตสาหกรรมเชิงนิเวศ เพื่อให้ภาคอุตสาหกรรมลดผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม ซึ่งในการประชุมคณะรัฐมนตรีเมื่อวันที่ 25 สิงหาคม 2552 ได้เห็นชอบร่วมกับมติคณะกรรมการร่วมภาครัฐและเอกชนเพื่อแก้ไขปัญหาทางเศรษฐกิจ ให้ครอบคลุมมิติการพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรม สิ่งแวดล้อม และชุมชน โดยประกอบด้วยหลายหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้อง ได้แก่ สำนักงานพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสังคมแห่งชาติ กระทรวงอุตสาหกรรม กรมโรงงานอุตสาหกรรม การนิคมอุตสาหกรรมแห่งประเทศไทย กรมอุตสาหกรรมพื้นที่และการเหมืองแร่ สำนักงานกองทุนสนับสนุนการวิจัย สำนักงานนวัตกรรมแห่งชาติ และสภาอุตสาหกรรมแห่งประเทศไทย
