5 มิถุนายน ของทุกปี ประชาชาติทั่วโลกได้กำหนดให้เป็น วันแห่งการร่วมมือระหว่างชาติของทั่วโลกเกี่ยวกับสิ่งแวดล้อม

หากนับย้อนไป ณ จุดเริ่มแรกของวันดังกล่าวที่ได้มีการตื่นตัวในด้านวิกฤตการณ์สิ่งแวดล้อมขึ้นทั่วโลก จึงได้มีมติให้จัดการประชุมใหญ่ที่กรุงสตอกโฮลม์ ระหว่างวันที่ 5 – 16 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2515 โดยมีรัฐบาลของประเทศสวีเดนเป็นเจ้าภาพ เรียกการประชุมนี้ว่า "การประชุมสหประชาชาติเรื่องสิ่งแวดล้อมของมนุษย์" ในการประชุมครั้งนั้นมีผู้เข้าร่วมประชุมกว่า 1,200 คน จาก 113 ประเทศ และมีผู้สังเกตการณ์อีกกว่า 1,500 คน จากหน่วยงานของรัฐ องค์การสหประชาชาติ สื่อมวลชนแขนงต่างๆ เพื่อพิจารณาร่วมกันในการที่จะหาหนทางแก้ไขปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ประเทศต่างๆกำลังเผชิญอยู่ ผลจากการประชุมครั้งนั้นได้มีข้อตกลงร่วมกันหลายๆอย่าง อาทิเช่น การจัดตั้งโครงการสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งสหประชาชาติ ซึ่งมีสำนักงานใหญ่อยู่ที่ กรุงไนโรบี ประเทศเคนยา
