จุดเริ่มต้นของชมรมพุทธธรรมธรรมศาสตร์สายพระป่า & ชมรมพุทธสายวัดพระธรรมกาย
ในช่วงเดือน มีนาคม – เมษายน พ.ศ. 2549 รศ.ดร.สมดี หงส์ไพศาลวิวัฒน์ ได้เข้าร่วมประชุมกับทางมหาวิทยาลัยหลายครั้ง เพื่อผลักดันก่อตั้งชมรมพุทธธรรมธรรมศาสตร์และสร้างอุทยานการเรียนรู้ที่หอ พระ โดยได้กำหนดโครงสร้างการบริหารงาน และการดำเนินกิจกรรมของชมรมพุทธธรรมธรรมศาสตร์ต่อที่ประชุม โดยสมาชิกของชมรมพุทธธรรมธรรมศาสตร์มาจากบุคคล 5 กลุ่ม คือ อาจารย์ , ข้าราชการ , เจ้าหน้าที่ , นักศึกษา และ ประชาชนทั่วไป แต่ยังไม่ได้รับการพิจารณาอนุมัติให้จัดตั้งเป็นชมรมได้ เนื่องจากในมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์มีชมรมพุทธอยู่แล้ว คือ ชุมนุมพุทธศาสตร์และประเพณี ( เป็นชมรมพุทธเก่าแก่แต่ปัจจุบันเป็นสายวัดพระธรรมกายแล้ว ) ได้เคยมีผู้พยายามจะก่อตั้งชมรมพุทธขึ้นมาแล้ว หลายครั้งแต่ทุกครั้งก็ไม่เคยประสบผลสำเร็จ เพราะทางมหาวิทยาลัยได้ให้เหตุผลว่ามีชมรมพุทธอยู่แล้วไม่มีความจำเป็นต้อง ตั้งขึ้นมาอีก การจัดตั้งก็สามารถทำได้แต่ต้องอยู่ในฐานะกลุ่มอิสระ ฉะนั้นชมรมพุทธธรรมธรรมศาสตร์ก็จัดอยู่ในฐานะกลุ่มอิสระจะใช้คำว่าชมรมหรือ ชุมนุมไม่ได้ ส่วนการดำเนินกิจกรรมก็สามารถทำได้เช่นเดียวกับชุมนุม/ชมรม ต่างๆในมหาวิทยาลัย
เมื่อทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างเป็นรูปธรรมขึ้นมาทั้งหมดแล้ว ก็เริ่มดำเนินกิจกรรมในราวต้นเดือนกันยายน พ.ศ.2549 และนับได้ว่าเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการดำเนินงานภายใต้ชื่อ กลุ่มพุทธธรรมกรรมฐานมหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ สาเหตุที่ใช้คำว่ากลุ่มก็เนื่องจากเหตุผลข้างต้นดังที่กล่าวมาแล้ว ส่วนคำว่า ” พุทธธรรมกรรมฐาน ” นั้น มีเหตุผล 3 ประการ คือ
1. เพื่อให้เกียรติแก่ชมรมเดิมที่เคยสังกัดอยู่ คือ ชมรมพุทธธรรมธรรมศาสตร์ จึงใช้คำขึ้นต้นว่า ” พุทธธรรม ” เช่นกัน
2. คำว่า ” กรรมฐาน ” คือยึดแนวทางการดำเนินของพระกรรมฐานสายหลวงปู่มั่น ภูริทัตโต
3. เกิด ขึ้นได้เพราะอาศัยพึ่งบารมีพ่อแม่ครูบาอาจารย์ให้ความอนุเคราะห์ช่วยเหลือ คือ หลวงปู่หลอด ปโมทิโต และ หลวงปู่เจี๊ยะ จุนฺโท
