ชาวไทยมุสลิมภาคใต้ มีประเพณีการแต่งงานแตกต่างไปจากชาวไทยพุทธ ทั้งนี้เพราะต้อง ปฏิบัติให้เป็นไปตามศาสนาบัญญัติ จะละเมิดไม่ได้
การเลือกคู่ครองของไทยมุสลิม ต้องเป็นไปตามศาสนบัญญัติที่ว่า ต้องแต่งงานกับ คนที่เป็นมุสลิมด้วยกันเท่านั้น ในกรณีที่เป็นคนนอกศาสนา จะต้องให้เข้านับถือศาสนาอิสลาม เสียก่อน ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้การปฏิบัติเป็นไปในทางเดียวกัน และเมื่อมีลูกด้วยกันลูกจะได้เริ่มนับถือ ในสิ่งที่ถูกต้อง เป็นการวางรากฐานศาสนาแต่เยาว์วัย อายุที่สมควรแต่งงาน ถ้าเป็นผู้หญิงต้อง ภายหลังจากที่มีประจำเดือนแล้วอายุประมาณ 13 -15 ปี แต่ในปัจจุบันเยาวชนมีการศึกษาดีขึ้น การแต่งงานตั้งแต่อายุยังน้อยได้ลดน้อยลงไปด้วย

การสู่ขอ
