เครื่องพิมพ์ดีด เป็นเครื่องกลที่มนุษย์ประดิษฐ์ขึ้นเพื่อใช้แทนการเขียนด้วยมือ ทำให้เกิดความสะดวกในการอ่าน และการเผยแพร่ มีลักษณะเป็นแป้นพิมพ์ แล้วใช้คานกระแทกลงบนผ้าคาร์บอน ทับลงบนกระดาษอีกที่หนึ่ง ปัจจุบัน พัฒนาเป็นเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดไฟฟ้า สามารถพิมพ์ตัวหนังสือได้มากขึ้น และออกแรงกดน้อยลง

อดีต

เครื่องพิมพ์ดีดเครื่องแรกเป็นแบบภาษาอังกฤษสร้างโดยวิศวกรชื่อเฮนรี่ มิล ณ ประเทศอังกฤษ จดทะเบียนสิทธิบัตรเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2237 ในตอนแรกนั้นแป้นพิมพ์มีถึง 7 แถว 84 ปุ่ม ซึ่งแป้นพิมพ์นี้ถูกเรียกในปัจจุบันว่าแบบ 2 ชั้น เนื่องจากมีแถวและปุ่มมากเป็น 2 เท่าของแป้นพิมพ์รุ่นปัจจุบันที่แต่ละปุ่มจะมี 2 ตัวอักษร ต่อมาได้มีการสร้างปุ่ม Shift และรวมอักษร 2 ตัวให้อยู่ในปุ่มเดียว จึงทำให้แป้นพิมพ์แบบ 2 ชั้นไม่ได้รับความนิยมอีกต่อไป
