ปี 2558 ที่ประเทศไทยจะก้าวสู่ความเป็นประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน จึงเป็นทั้งโอกาสและความท้าทาย

ก่อนจะเป็นเออีซี

สมาคม ประชาชาติแห่งเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ หรือ อาเซียน (ASEAN) ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2510 โดยระยะแรกนั้นมีสมาชิกเริ่มแรกแค่ 6 ประเทศ คือ บรูไน, มาเลเซีย, อินโดนีเซีย, ฟิลิปปินส์, สิงคโปร์ และไทย ภายหลังมีสมาชิกเพิ่มขึ้นอีก 4 ประเทศ ได้แก่กัมพูชา, สปป.ลาว, เมียนมาร์ และ เวียดนาม หรือที่เรียกว่า CLMV

มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสร้างสันติภาพในภูมิภาค นำไปสู่ความเจริญก้าวหน้าทางเศรษฐกิจ สังคม และวัฒนธรรม และมีการรวมกลุ่มกันเพื่อขยายความร่วมมือทางการค้าระหว่างกันให้มากยิ่งขึ้น โดยการจัดทำเขตเสรีการค้าอาเซียน (AFTA) ในปี 2535

นับตั้งแต่การ ก่อตั้งอาเซียนเป็นต้นมา ประเทศสมาชิกต่างพยายามส่งเสริมการยึดมั่นในบรรทัดฐานร่วมกัน โดยอาเซียนให้ความสำคัญต่อการเสริมสร้างความแข็งแกร่งทางเศรษฐกิจร่วมกัน อย่างต่อเนื่อง ซึ่งภายหลังจากการดำเนินการไปสู่การจัดตั้งเขตการค้าเสรีอาเซียน หรือ อาฟต้า (ASEAN Free Trade Area: AFTA) ได้บรรลุผลสำเร็จแล้วนั้น ในการประชุมสุดยอดอาเซียน (ASEAN Summit) ครั้งที่ 8 เมื่อเดือนพฤศจิกายน 2545 ณ ประเทศกัมพูชา ที่ประชุมได้เห็นชอบให้อาเซียนกำหนดทิศทางการดำเนินงานเพื่อมุ่งไปสู่การ เป็นประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (ASEAN Economic Community : AEC) อันมีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกับประชาคมเศรษฐกิจยุโรป (European Economic Community: EEC) โดยที่เดิมทีเดียวนั้นกำหนดการรวมตัวเป็นประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียนให้เกิดขึ้น ภายในปี 2563 หรือ ค.ศ.2020
