ประวัติ
หม่อมหลวงปิ่นเกิดเมื่อวันที่ 24 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2446 ณ บ้านถนนอัษฎางค์ กรุงเทพมหานคร เป็นบุตรคนที่ 6 ใน 13 คน ของเจ้าพระยาพระเสด็จสุเรนทราธิบดี (หม่อมราชวงศ์เปีย มาลากุล) และท่านผู้หญิงเสงี่ยม พระเสด็จสุเรนทราธิบดี (เสงี่ยม มาลากุล ณ อยุธยา (นามสกุลเดิม วสันตสิงห์)) ท่านมีพี่น้องร่วมบิดามารดาทั้งสิ้น 8 คน ได้แก่

• หม่อมหลวงป้อง มาลากุล
• หม่อมหลวงเปนศรี มาลากุล
• หม่อมหลวงปนศักดิ์ มาลากุล
• หม่อมหลวงปอง เทวกุล (สมรสกับหม่อมเจ้าสุรวุฒิประวัติ เทวกุล)
• หม่อมหลวงปิ่น มาลากุล
• หม่อมหลวงเปี่ยมสิน มาลากุล
• หม่อมหลวงปานตา วสันตสิงห์ (สมรสกับนายเมืองเริง วสันตสิงห์)
ประวัติการศึกษา
ปี พ.ศ. 2450 เมื่อหม่อมหลวงปิ่นมีอายุได้ 4 ขวบ ท่านได้เริ่มเรียนหนังสือที่บ้านกับครูแฉล้ม (แฉล้ม คุปตารักษ์) ต่อมาได้เข้ารับการศึกษาที่โรงเรียนสวนกุหลาบวิทยาลัย และต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2457 หม่อมหลวงปิ่นก็เข้าศึกษาที่โรงเรียนมหาดเล็กหลวง
ในปี พ.ศ. 2458 พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ แต่งตั้งให้เป็นนักเรียนมหาดเล็กในพระบรมมหาราชวัง ไม่ได้เรียนที่โรงเรียนอีก แต่ปลายปีนั้นก็ยังคงมาสอบไล่และสามารถสอบผ่านชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 ซึ่งทำให้เลื่อนไปเรียนในชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 แต่ก็ไม่ได้มาเรียนหรือมาสอบอีกเลย
พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ได้รับทุนของกระทรวงธรรมการ จึงออกไปศึกษาต่อ ณ ประเทศอังกฤษ โดยไปเข้าเรียนที่ The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS) หรือวิทยาลัยบูรพศึกษาและอาฟริกาศึกษา มหาวิทยาลัยลอนดอน และได้รับประกาศนียบัตรวิชาภาษาและวรรณคดีบาลีและสันสกฤต แล้วได้ย้ายไปศึกษาต่อที่คณะบูรพคดีศึกษา (Faculty of Oriental Studies) สถาบันตะวันออกของมหาวิทยาลัยอ๊อกซฟอร์ด ประสบความสำเร็จโดยได้ปริญญาตรี (B.A.) เกียรตินิยมสาขาบูรพคดีศึกษา (Oriental Studies) วิชาเอกภาษาบาลีและสันสกฤต ในปี พ.ศ. 2471
ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2474 ได้ศึกษาต่อในระดับปริญญาโทจนสำเร็จการศึกษา ได้รับปริญญาอักษรศาสตร์มหาบัณฑิต (M.A.) ระหว่างที่ศึกษาอยู่ในมหาวิทยาลัยอ๊อกซฟอร์ด ท่านสังกัดวิทยาลัยบเร๊สโนส (Brasenose College) และในปี พ.ศ. 2498 ท่านก็ได้สำเร็จการศึกษาจากวิทยาลัยป้องกันราชอาณาจักร (รุ่นแรก)

รับราชการ
ในปีพ.ศ. 2455 ได้ถวายตัวเป็นมหาดเล็กที่พระที่นั่งอัมพรสถาน ต่อมาได้เป็นอาจารย์ประจำกองแบบเรียนกรมวิชาการ อาจารย์พิเศษคณะอักษรศาสตร์ และวิทยาศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยในปีพ.ศ. 2474 ในปีพ.ศ. 2475 เป็นอาจารย์โท อาจารย์ประจำคณะอักษรศาสตร์ และวิทยาศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และยังได้เป็นหัวหน้าแผนกฝึกหัดครูมัธยม คณะอักษรศาสตร์และวิทยาศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยและรักษาการในตำแหน่งครูใหญ่โรงเรียนมัธยมหอวังในปีพ.ศ. 2477 อีกด้วย หม่อมหลวงปิ่นได้เป็นอาจารย์เอก อันดับ 1
ต่อมาในปีพ.ศ. 2480 ท่านได้ก่อตั้งโรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษาแห่งจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย โรงเรียนสหศึกษาแห่งแรกในประเทศไทย ท่านดำรงตำแหน่งผู้อำนวยการท่านแรก 5 ปีต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2485 ได้รับแต่งตั้งเป็นอธิบดีกรมสามัญศึกษาอีกตำแหน่งหนึ่งอีกด้วย ในปี พ.ศ. 2487 ท่านได้พ้นจากตำแหน่งผู้อำนวยการโรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษาและเป็นที่ปรึกษาโรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษาและทำงานในหน้าที่เลขาธิการจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย
ในปี พ.ศ. 2489 ท่านดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นปลัดกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ และในปี พ.ศ. 2495 - พ.ศ. 2496 ท่านได้เป็นรักษาการอธิบดีกรมวิชาการ หลังจากนั้นในปี พ.ศ. 2497 ได้เป็นรักษาการอธิบดีกรมการฝึกหัดครู รักษาการอธิการวิทยาลัยวิชาการศึกษา ศาสตราจารย์พิเศษในคณะครุศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย
ในปี พ.ศ. 2492 จัดตั้งโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูชั้นสูงขึ้นที่ถนนประสานมิตร ต่อมาใน พ.ศ. 2496 เลื่อนฐานะเป็นวิทยาลัยวิชาการศึกษา ประสานมิตร และเป็น "มหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ" ในปัจจุบัน โดยได้ดำรงตำแหน่งอธิการคนแรกระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2497-2499
หม่อมหลวงปิ่น มาลากุลดำรงตำแหน่งรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงวัฒนธรรมตั้งแต่วันที่ 21 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2500 ถึง 20 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2501 และดำรงตำแหน่งรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงศึกษาธิการตั้งแต่พ.ศ. 2500 ถึง พ.ศ. 2512 เป็นเวลายาวนานถึง 12 ปีเศษ
สถาปนามหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรวิทยาเขตพระราชวังสนามจันทร์
ปี พ.ศ. 2509 มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร โดยหม่อมหลวงปิ่น มาลากุล อธิการบดีในขณะนั้น มีนโยบายที่จะเปิดคณะวิชาและสาขาวิชาที่ หลากหลายขึ้น แต่เนื่องจากบริเวณพื้นที่ในวังท่าพระคับแคบมาก ไม่สามารถจะขยายพื้นที่ออกไปได้ จึงได้ขยายเขตการศึกษาไปยังพระราชวังสนามจันทร์ จังหวัดนครปฐม โดยจัดตั้งคณะอักษรศาสตร์ พ.ศ. 2511 คณะศึกษาศาสตร์ พ.ศ. 2513 (เป็นคณบดีท่านแรกของคณะ) และคณะวิทยาศาสตร์ พ.ศ. 2515 ตามลำดับ หลังจากนั้น จัดตั้งคณะเภสัชศาสตร์ พ.ศ. 2529 คณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีอุตสาหกรรม พ.ศ. 2535 สาเหตุที่เลือกพระราชวังสนามจันทร์เป็นที่ตั้งวิทยาเขตแห่งใหม่ หม่อมหลวงปิ่น มาลากุล ได้ให้เหตุผลไว้ดังนี้
ประการแรก พระราชวังสนามจันทร์เคยเป็นพระราชวังของพระบาทสมเด็จพระ มงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว พระมหากษัตริย์ผู้สนพระราชหฤทัยเป็นอย่างยิ่งในทาง โบราณคดีและศิลปะทั้งปวง ทรงเป็นนักโบราณคดีและศิลปินชั้นเยี่ยมโดยเฉพาะ ทาง วรรณศิลป์ ทรงสนับสนุนนาฏศิลป์ตลอดรัชสมัยของพระองค์
ประการที่สอง บริเวณพระราชวังสนามจันทร์เป็นที่ตั้งของเทวาลัยคเณศ ซึ่ง พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวได้โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้น นอกจากนี้ พระคเณศยังเป็นเทพเจ้าแห่งศิลปะ และเป็นตราของทางมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร อยู่แล้ว
ประการสุดท้าย ที่จังหวัดนครปฐมมีพระปฐมเจดีย์ประดิษฐานอยู่ นับได้ว่าเป็น ศูนย์กลางของโบราณคดีและศิลปะที่สำคัญในประเทศไทย ดังนั้นบริเวณพระราชวัง สนามจันทร์ จังหวัดนครปฐม จึงเหมาะที่จะเป็นที่ตั้งของมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร
การก่อตั้งโรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา
หม่อมหลวงปิ่น มาลากุลได้ก่อตั้งโรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษาขึ้น เมื่อวันที่ 3 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2480 โดยนักเรียนเริ่มเรียนในเดือนพฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2481 โดยมี ฯพณฯ ดำรงตำแหน่งผู้อำนวยการคนแรกของโรงเรียน ในปีแรกๆ โรงเรียนได้เจริญขึ้นเป็นลำดับ เช่น ทางด้านวิชาการมีผลเป็นที่น่าพอใจ การสร้างตึก 2 แล้วเสร็จในปี พ.ศ. 2482 และต่อมาได้สร้างตึก 3 ไปจนจดถนนอังรีดูนังต์ ในเวลานี้นอกจากผลงานทางด้านวิชาการจะเป็นที่น่าพอใจแล้ว นักเรียนยังได้แสดงควา

รับราชการ
