ชนิดของเครื่องกำเนิดไฟฟ้าพลังงานลม แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภทคือ
- Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine เป็นกังหันลมที่มีแกนหมุนและใบพัดตั้งฉากกับการเคลื่อนที่ของลมในแนวราบ
- Vertical Axis Wind Turbine เป็นกังหันลมที่มีแกนหมุนขนานกับการเคลื่อนที่ของลมในแนวราบ โดยมีใบพัดเป็นตัวตั้งฉากรับแรงลม
