พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระราชดำริว่า หนังสือประเภทสารานุกรมนั้น บรรจุสรรพวิชาการอันเป็นสาระไว้ครบทุกแขนง เมื่อมีความต้องการหรือพอใจจะเรียนรู้เรื่องใดก็สามารถค้นหาอ่านทราบโดย สะดวก นับว่าเป็นหนังสือที่มีประโยชน์เกื้อกูลการศึกษา เพิ่มพูนปัญญาด้วยตนเอง ของประชาชนอย่างสำคัญ โดยเฉพาะในยามที่มีปัญหาการขาดแคลนครูและที่เล่าเรียนเช่นขณะนี้ หนังสือสารานุกรมจะช่วยคลี่คลายให้บรรเทาเบาบางลงได้เป็นอย่างดี จึงมีพระราชดำรัสให้ตั้งโครงการสารานุกรมไทย สำหรับเยาวชนฯ ตั้งแต่พุทธศักราช ๒๕๑๑ ซึ่งดำเนินการสร้างหนังสือสารานุกรมฉบับใหม่อีกชุดหนึ่ง มีความมุ่งหมายที่จะนำวิชาการแขนงต่าง ๆ ที่ควรศึกษา ออกเผยแพร่แก่เยาวชนให้แพร่หลายทั่วถึงเพื่อเยาวชนจักได้หาความรู้ช่วยตัว เอง ได้จากการอ่านหนังสือ และเพื่อให้ได้ประโยชน์อันกว้างขวางยิ่งขึ้น ทรงกำหนดหลักการทำคำอธิบายเรื่องต่างๆ แต่ละเรื่องเป็นสามตอนหรือสามระดับสำหรับให้เด็กรุ่นเล็กอ่านเข้าใจได้ระดับหนึ่ง สำหรับเด็กรุ่นกลางอ่านเข้าใจได้ระดับหนึ่ง และสำหรับเด็กรุ่นใหญ่รวมถึงผู้ใหญ่สนใจอ่านได้อีกระดับหนึ่ง เพื่ออำนวยโอกาสให้บิดามารดาสามารถใช้หนังสือนั้นเป็นเครื่องมือแนะนำวิชา แก่บุตรธิดาและให้พี่แนะนำวิชาแก่น้องเป็นลำดับกันลงไป นอกจากนั้น เมื่อเรื่องหนึ่งเรื่องใดมีความเกี่ยวพันต่อเนื่องถึงเรื่องอื่น ๆ ก็ให้อ้างอิงถึงเรื่องนั้น ๆ ด้วยทุกเรื่องไป ด้วยประสงค์จะให้ผู้ศึกษาทราบตระหนักว่าวิชาการแต่ละสาขามีความสัมพันธ์ เกี่ยวเนื่องถึงกัน พึงจะศึกษาให้ครบถ้วนทั่วถึง
โดยได้มีการจัดแบ่งวิทยาการของสารานุกรมไทยสำหรับเยาวชนออกเป็น ๔ สาขา คือ วิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี สังคมศาสตร์ และมนุษยศาสตร์ พร้อมกับกำหนดหัวข้อเรื่อง และวิทยากรผู้เขียนเรื่องต่าง ๆ ของแต่ละสาขาวิชา และในปัจจุบันได้มีการจัดพิมพ์สารานุกรมไทยสำหรับเยาวชนแล้ว รวม ๒๖ เล่ม
