อัมพชาดก
พระพุทธเจ้าตรัสเล่าเรื่อง "อัมพชาดก" ประกอบเรื่องที่พระเทวทัตคิดเป็นใหญ่และจะปกครองสังฆมณฑลแทนพระพุทธเจ้า รวมทั้งสังฆเภท (ทำให้สงฆ์แตกกัน) สร้างความแตกแยกขึ้นในพระพุทธศาสนา พระพุทธเจ้าจึงตรัสว่า "มิใช่แต่ชาตินี้เท่านั้นที่เทวทัตบอกคืนอาจารย์ ชาติก่อนก็เช่นกัน" แล้วจึงทรงเล่าเรื่องอัมพชาดก ความว่า
ในอดีตกาลมีพราหมณ์หนุ่มคนหนึ่งได้เล่าเรียนมนต์เสกมะม่วงให้ออกผลได้ในชั่วพริบตาโดยอาจารย์ซึ่งเป็นจัณฑาล มีข้อแม้ว่า "มนต์นี้หาค่ามิได้ อาศัยมนต์นี้แล้วจะได้ลาภสักการะมากมาย ถ้ามีคนถามว่าเรียนมนต์นี้มาจากใคร ให้บอกตามความเป็นจริงว่าศึกษามาจากอาจารย์ผู้เป็นจัณฑาล มิฉะนั้นแล้วมนต์ก็จะเสื่อม"
พราหมณ์หนุ่มใช้มนต์เสกมะม่วงในการเลี้ยงชีพ วันหนึ่งคนรัษาพระราชอุทยานของพระเจ้ากรุงพาราณสีซื้อมะม่วงที่เกิดจากมนต์ไปถวายพระราชา พระองค์ทรงติดใจรสชาติของมะม่วง จึงให้ถามพราหมณ์หนุ่มว่าเรียนมนต์เสกมะม่วงมาจากใคร ด้วยความละอายที่จะบอกว่าอาจารย์ของตนเป็นจัณฑาล พราหมณ์หนุ่มจึงกราบทูลเป็นเท็จว่าได้เล่าเรียนมนต์มาจากทิศาปาโมกข์แห่งกรุงตักศิลา ทันทีที่พราหมณ์กล่าวเท็จ มนต์ก็เสื่อมโดยไม่รู้ตัว เมื่อพระราชารับสั่งให้เสกมะม่วงให้เสวย แม้พราหมณ์จะร่ายมนต์อย่างไร ก็ไม่ได้ผลอย่างเช่นเคย พราหมณ์หนุ่มจึงกราบทูลความจริงว่าตนได้เรียนมนต์มาจากอาจารย์จัณฑาล
เมื่อพระราชาทรงทราบความจริงก็กริ้วพราหมณ์หนุ่ม แล้วตรัสว่า "บุคคลใดรู้แจ้งธรรมจากอาจารย์ใด ไม่ว่าเป็นกษัตริย์ พราหมณ์ แพศย์ ศูทร คนจัณฑาล อาจารย์นั้นแลเป็นคนที่ประเสริฐสุดของเขา" เมื่อตรัสแล้วพระราชาก็รับสั่งให้เฆี่ยนพราหมณ์หนุ่ม และขับไล่ออกจากพระนคร
พราหมณ์หนุ่มกลับไปยังที่อยู่ของอาจารย์จัณฑาล กราบแทบเท้าอาจารย์แล้วสารภาพความผิด และขอเรียนมนต์ใหม่ แต่อาจารย์จัณฑาลกล่าวว่า " เราประสาทมนต์แก่เจ้าโดยธรรม เจ้าก็รับเอาไปโดยธรรม ถ้าเจ้าตั้งอยู่ในธรรม มนต์ก็จะไม่เสื่อม ดูก่อนเจ้าทรามปัญญา มนต์นั้นเจ้าได้มาโดยลำบาก เป็นของหายากที่จะหาได้ในมนุษย์ในโลกนี้ เราอุตส่าห์ถ่ายทอดให้เจ้าเพื่อเป็นเครื่องมือเลี้ยงชีพ แต่เจ้ากลับทำลายด้วยการพูดเท็จ หลอกลวง เจ้าคนชั่วเอย มนต์ใดจะมีแก่เจ้า เราไม่มีวันถ่ายทอดมนต์ให้เจ้าอีกแล้ว" เมื่อกล่าวจบ อาจารย์จัณฑาลก็ขับไล่พราหมณ์หนุ่มไปให้พ้นจากบ้านของตน พราหมณ์หนุ่มออกจากบ้านอาจารย์จัณฑาลด้วยจิตใจแตกสลาย คิดว่าตนจะมีชีวิตอยู่ทำไม ตายเสียดีกว่า แล้วก็เดินทางเข้าป่า ตายอย่างคนอนาถา
