คุรุสภาจะดำเนินการคัดเลือกครูภาษาไทยดีเด่น เพื่อเป็นการเชิดชูเกียรติครูภาษาไทย ส่งเสริมขวัญและกำลังใจ ส่งเสริมให้ครูรักษาคุณสมบัติและหน้าที่ของครูจนเกิดประโยชน์แก่ส่วนรวม ให้เป็นแบบอย่างแก่ครูทั่วประเทศ เสริมสร้างศรัทธาและความเชื่อถือในวิชาชีพครูให้เป็นที่ประจักษ์แก่สังคม สำหรับผู้ได้รับการคัดเลือกจะได้รับรางวัลเข็มเชิดชูเกียรติจารึกพระนามาภิไธยย่อ สธ ของ สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี และโล่เกียรติคุณครูภาษาไทยดีเด่นจากคุรุสภา

ผู้ได้รับการคัดเลือกต้องเป็นครูหรืออาจารย์ประจำซึ่งสอนภาษาไทยในสถานศึกษาระดับการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน ระดับอาชีวศึกษา และระดับอุดมศึกษาทั้งของรัฐและเอกชน สอนภาษาไทยอย่างต่อเนื่อง ไม่น้อยกว่า 5 ปี ต้องเป็นผู้ที่แสวงหาและพัฒนาความรู้เกี่ยวกับภาษาไทยอยู่เสมอ สามารถใช้ภาษาไทยได้ถูกต้องทุกด้าน เป็นต้น

วิธีคัดเลือก คุรุสภาเขตพื้นที่การศึกษา คัดเลือกครูสังกัด สพป. และ สพม. จำนวน 3 คน สังกัด สช. หรืออาชีวศึกษา จำนวน 1 คน และหน่วยงานต้นสังกัดอื่นๆ และสมาคมครูภาษาไทยคัดเลือกตามหลักเกณฑ์และสัดส่วนที่กำหนด และเสนอไปยังสำนักงานเลขาธิการคุรุสภา ภายในวันที่ 31 พฤษภาคม 2557
