หลายคนคงรู้จักการละหมาด ซึ่งประเทศมาเลเซียนั้นมีผู้นับถือศาสนาอิสลามมากที่สุดในประเทศ
โดยมีมากถึง 55% การละหมาด เป็นการปฏิบัติศาสนกิจอย่างหนึ่งในศาสนาอิสลาม เพื่อเป็นการภักดีต่ออัลลอฮฺ มุสลิมทุกคนจะต้องละหมาด วันละ 5 เวลา เรียกว่า ละหมาดฟัรฎู ละหมาด หมายถึง การขอพร ความหมายทางศาสนาหมายถึง การกล่าวและการกระทำ ซึ่งเริ่มต้นด้วยตักบีร และ จบลงด้วยสะลาม การละหมาดเป็นการสร้างเอกภาพอย่างหนึ่งของมุสลิม เมื่อละหมาดมุสลิมทั่วโลก หันหน้าไปทางกิบละฮฺ เพื่อเคารพภักดีต่ออัลลอฮฺ การละหมาด ฝึกฝนให้เป็นคนตรงต่อเวลา มีความอดทน และขัดเกลาจิตใจ ไม่ให้ประพฤติสิ่งหนึ่งสิ่งใดในทางชั่วร้าย
ชาวมลายูในประเทศมาเลเซีย มีขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณีอยู่ 2 แบบ คือ

1. ชาวมลายูที่ยึดถือขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณีแบบ Adat Temenggong
เป็นขนบธรรมเนียมที่ยึดถือในรัฐส่วนใหญ่ของแหลมมลายู ยกเว้นรัฐนัครีซัมบีลัน ว่ากันว่าเป็นขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณีที่ยึดถือมาตั้งแต่ยุคแรกรัฐมะละกาจนขยายไปยังรัฐต่างๆในแหลมมลายู ขนบธรรมเนียมนี้จัดตั้งขึ้นโดย Datuk Ketemenggungan จากเกาะสุมาตรา จากการที่ขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณี Adat Temenggong มีการผสมผสานกับขนบธรรมเนียมเดิมที่มีอยู่แล้ว จึงได้เกิดเป็นกฎหมายมีชขื่อแตกต่างกัน เช่น กฎหมายมะละกา (Undang-Undang Melaka) กฎหมายโยโฮร์(Undang-Undang Johor) และกฎหมายเคดะห์ (Undang-Undang Kedah)

หลักการของขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณี Adat Temenggong
•การลงโทษถือเป็นสิ่งที่ได้รับการตอบแทน
•การปกครองต้องใช้อำนาจเด็ดขาด
•การสืบมรดกถือหลักการตามบิดา (Patriline)
•การแต่งงานนั้นจะแต่งงานกับผู้ใดก็ได้ ถ้าไม่ผิดตามหลักการศาสนาอิสลาม (hukum syarak)

2. ชาวมลายูที่ยึดถือขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณีแบบ Adat Minangkabau หรือ Adat Perpatih เป็นขนบธรรมเนียมที่ยึดถือในรัฐนัครีซัมบีลัน และบางส่วนของรัฐมัละกา ผู้สร้างขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณีนี้คือ Datuk Nan Sebatang ซึ่งเป็นพี่น้องของ Datuk Ketumanggungan ผู้สร้างขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณี Adat Temenggong
