  อย่างไรก็ตาม งานวันเด็กแห่งชาติครั้งแรกของประเทศไทย จัดขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 3 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2498 จากนั้นเป็นต้นมา ราชการได้กำหนดวันจันทร์แรกของเดือนตุลาคมของทุกปี เป็นวันเด็กแห่งชาติ โดยจัดต่อเนื่องกันมาจนถึงปี 2506 ที่ประชุมคณะกรรมการจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติในปีนั้น ได้มีความเห็นพ้องต้องกันว่า สมควรที่จะเสนอเปลี่ยนวันจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติเสียใหม่ ด้วยเหตุผลว่า เดือนตุลาคมสำหรับประเทศไทย เป็นเดือนที่ยังอยู่ในฤดูฝน มีฝนตกมาก เด็ก ๆ ไม่สะดวกในการเดินทางมาร่วมงาน นอกจากนี้วันจันทร์เป็นวันปฏิบัติงานของผู้ปกครอง จึงไม่สามารถพาเด็กของตนไปร่วมงานได้

         ด้วยเหตุนี้ คณะรัฐมนตรีจึงมีมติเห็นชอบ ในวันที่ 5 กุมภาพันธ์ 2507 ว่า ควรจะเปลี่ยนเป็นวันเสาร์ที่สองของเดือนมกราคม ที่มีความเหมาะสมและสะดวกมากกว่า ตามที่คณะกรรมการจัดงานวัดเด็กแห่งชาติเสนอมา ส่งผลให้ในปี 2507 ไม่มีงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติด้วยการประกาศเปลี่ยนได้เลยวันมาแล้ว งานวันเด็กแห่งชาติจึงเริ่มจัดขึ้นใหม่อีกครั้งในปี 2508 เรื่อยมาถึงปัจจุบัน


 วัตถุประสงค์การจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติ

         สำหรับวัตถุประสงค์ของการจัดงานวันเด็กแห่งชาติ ที่รัฐบาลไทยกำหนดไว้ คือ เพื่อให้ประชาชนได้ตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของเด็ก สนใจในการเลี้ยงดูอบรมสั่งสอนเด็ก และช่วยเหลือสงเคราะห์เด็กเป็นพิเศษ เพื่อให้เด็กและและเยาวชนยึดมั่นในสถาบันชาติ ศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์ และการปกครองระบอบประชาธิปไตย อันมีพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นประมุข เพื่อให้เด็กรู้จักหน้าที่ของตนและอยู่ในระเบียบวินัยอันดี และเพื่อเผยแพร่ปฏิญญาสากลว่าด้วยสิทธิของเด็ก
