นอกจากนี้ยังมีความเสี่ยงของการเกิดไฟไหม้ห้องอบรมควัน รวมถึงการใช้ระยะเวลาในการอบยางที่นาน ทำให้สูญเสียเวลาและสิ้นเปลืองเชื้อเพลิงจำนวนมาก ส่งผลให้ต้นทุนการผลิตสูงขึ้นตามไปด้วย กระทบต่อชาวสวนยาง และผู้ประกอบการอย่างมาก

ทางมหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีมหานคร จึงได้วิจัยและพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีเตาอบยางแผ่นรมควันขึ้น ใน “โครงการเพิ่มศักยภาพการแปรรูปน้ำยางพาราแบบลดต้นทุนและรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อม” โดยร่วมมือกับ สำนักงานอุตสาหกรรมกลุ่มจังหวัดภาคใต้ฝั่งอ่าวไทย (พัทลุง ชุมพร สุราษฎร์ธานี นครศรีธรรมราช), โครงการสนับสนุนการพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีของอุตสาหกรรมไทย (iTAP) และสำนักงานพัฒนาวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีแห่งชาติ (สวทช.)

รศ.ดร.สุเจตน์ จันทรังษ์ อธิการบดีมหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีมหานคร กล่าวว่า การพัฒนาเตาอบยางมีโจทย์ที่จะต้องดำเนินการแก้ไข ทั้งในเรื่องไฟไหม้โรงอบยาง และได้แผ่นยางอบที่ไม่ได้คุณภาพ มีปริมาณยางที่เสียหายหลังผ่านการอบจำนวนมาก สีไม่สม่ำเสมอ และปัญหาสำคัญคือเรื่องของพลังงาน ซึ่งโรงอบยางจะต้องใช้ไม้เป็นเชื้อเพลิงเป็นเงินถึง 6-7 แสนบาทต่อปี มหาวิทยาลัยจึงเห็นว่าจะต้องเข้ามาหาวิธีแก้ปัญหาให้กับเกษตรกรชาวสวนยางให้สำเร็จ ซึ่งได้มอบหมายให้ รศ.ดร.ฐานิตย์ เมธิยานนท์ อาจารย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านพลังงานและการถ่ายเทความร้อนเป็นผู้รับผิดชอบโครงการ

ทั้งนี้ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2553 ได้สร้างเตาอบยางต้นแบบขึ้นมา ที่ จ.นครศรีธรรมราช ซึ่งได้ผลเป็นที่น่าพอใจ จากนั้นได้มีการพัฒนาเตาอบยางรุ่นต่อ ๆ มาให้ดียิ่งขึ้น ปัจจุบันได้มีการขยายผลนำเตาอบยางแผ่นรมควันแบบประหยัดพลังงาน ไปติดตั้งให้กับกลุ่มเกษตรกรสวนยาง กลุ่มสัจจะ พัฒนายาง บ้านท้ายวัง จ.ตราด จำนวน 2 เตา
