ความเชื่อในเรื่องข้าวทิพย์มีอยู่ว่า ในสมัยพุทธกาลนางสุชาดาได้นำข้าวนี้ไปถวายสมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ซึ่งประทับอยู่ใต้ต้นโพธิ์ หลังจากที่พระองค์รับถาดข้าวมธุปายาสจากนางสุชาดาแล้วก็ทรงอธิษฐานด้วยการนำถาดไปลอยน้ำ ถ้าหากพระองค์จะเสด็จตรัสรู้ในคืนวันเพ็ญขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ เดือน ๖ ก็ให้ถาดนี้จงลอยทวนน้ำ หากไม่สำเร็จก็ขอให้ถาดนี้จมหายไปกับแม่น้ำคงคา
