การปฏิบัติการพยาบาลให้มีคุณภาพ ภายใต้การเปลี่ยนแปลงของสังคมที่รวดเร็ว จำเป็นต้องมีการแสวงหาข้อมูลเชิงประจักษ์ที่จะนำไปสู่การตัดสินใจทางการพยาบาลได้อย่างถูกต้องตามสถานการณ์ที่มีความหลากหลาย อันจะนำไปสู่คุณภาพการบริการที่ดีต่อผู้รับบริการ จึงจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่องค์กรพยาบาล ผู้บริหารทางการพยาบาลต้องส่งเสริมให้เกิดการพัฒนาระบบการบันทึก หรือฐานข้อมูลผลลัพธ์ทางการพยาบาลให้เข้าสู่ระบบงานประจำ ตลอดจนการส่งเสริมให้มีการเขียนและเผยแพร่ผลการวิจัยจากการปฏิบัติการพยาบาล งานวิจัยเป็นงานที่เป็นองค์ความรู้สำหรับผู้สนใจมาศึกษาค้นคว้า และเป็นงานวิจัยที่มีคุณค่าในการนำมาใช้กับสภาพปัญหาที่แท้จริงที่จะนำไปสู่การทำให้ผู้รับบริการมีความพึงพอใจในบริการ หน่วยงานที่มีการทำวิจัยจากงานประจำ(Routine to research) จะเป็นหน่วยงานที่มีการเติบโต พัฒนาไปสู่องค์กรแห่งการเรียนรู้ (Learning organization) ในที่สุด (วรรณรัตน์ ศรีกนก และ พัชราภรณ์ อุ่นเตจ๊ะ, 2555: 22)
จากการสัมภาษณ์อาจารย์ ดร.กุลธิดา พานิชกุล ได้มีความคิดเห็นเกี่ยวกับบทบาทวิชาชีพพยาบาลด้านการวิจัยดังต่อไปนี้
“การนำวิจัยมาประยุกต์ใช้ตามจรรยาบรรณวิชาชีพข้อ 7 พยาบาลที่มีส่วนร่วมในการสนับสนุนและพัฒนาวิชาชีพและส่งเสริมมาตรฐานการปฎิบัติการพยาบาล ซึ่งพยาบาลจะต้องทำงานภายใต้องค์ความรู้ซึ่งจะต้องศึกษาและนำมาพัฒนาวิชาชีพ ทั้งยังสามารถนำข้อมูลงานวิจัยที่ได้ศึกษานั้นมาแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้กับสหวิชาชีพ คือ แพทย์ เภสัชกร นักกายภาพบำบัด นักโภชนากร เพื่อนำมาปรับปรุงพัฒนาในบทบาท สร้างเสริม ป้องกัน รักษา ฟื้นฟู และมีการขยายบทบาทวิชาชีพโดยการเน้นการดูและแบบ home health care งานวิจัยที่ดีควรมีลักษณะที่เน้นการส่งเสริมสุขภาพคนไทยที่ดีขึ้นและใส่ใจในเรื่องของการปรับเปลี่ยนพฤติกรรมติดตามดูแลผลอย่างต่อเนื่อง เพื่อผลสัมฤทธิ์ที่ดี”
