จนมาถึงผลงานที่สร้างชื่อเสียงให้เขามากที่สุดคือ “หลอดไฟฟ้า” โดยการทดลองมาหลายครั้งเพื่อให้หลอดไฟมีความทนทานต่อความร้อนสูง ซึ่งมีชื่อว่า Incandescent Electric Lamp มีความคงทนถึง 45 ชม.ทำจากเส้นใยจากฝ้ายมาบรรจุในหลอดสูญญากาศ แต่ไม่ค่อยเป็นที่นิยมเท่าไหร่เพราะราคาแพง จนเขามาก่อตั้งบริษัทชื่อ Edison Electric limit Company เพื่อสร้างเครื่องผลิตกระแสไฟฟ้าและเรียกชื่อว่า “ Beauty Mary Ann “ ตามชื่อภรรยา และวางสายไปทั่วนิวยอร์ค จนทำให้ทั้งเมืองสว่างไสวและใช้ไฟฟ้ากันอย่างทั่วถึง นอกจากนี้เขายังประดิษฐ์เครื่องมือเครื่องใช้อีกหลายอย่าง เช่น กล้องถ่ายภาพยนตร์ เครื่องฉายภาพยนตร์ และผลิตภาพยนตร์เองอีกด้วยใช้ชื่อว่า Synchronized Movie เครื่องเล่นจานเสียง เครื่องขยายเสียง เครื่องอัดสำเนา เขาทำงานอย่างหนักแต่พักผ่อนน้อยเพราะทุ่มเทให้กับงานประดิษฐ์คิดค้น จนไม่มีเวลาพักผ่อนจนทำให้เขาล้มป่วยลง จนเสียชีวิตในวันที่ 18 ตุลาคม 1931 ซึ่งรัฐบาลขณะนั้นได้สร้างหลอดไฟฟ้าที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก ไว้บนยอดเสาสูง 13 ฟุต 8 นิ้ว เส้นผ่าศูนย์กลาง 9 ฟุต 2 นิ้ว 3 ตัน มีหลอดไฟบรรจุอยู่ภายใน 1 ดวงซึ่งมีกำลังไฟรวมกันถึง 5,200 วัตต์ และสร้างเสร็จในปี คศ.1934 เพื่อระลึกถึงคุณงามความดีของเขา
