จุดเริ่มต้นของการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑสถ

จุดเริ่มต้นของการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ บ้านเชียง มาจากการพบภาชนะลายเขียนสี เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2503 โดยชาวบ้านเชียง ต่อมาปี พ.ศ. 2509 ชาวอเมริกัน ได้พบภาชนะดินเผาที่บ้านเชียงโดยบังเอิญจึงนำไปแจ้งที่กรมศิลปากร ปีพ.ศ. 2510 จึงได้มีการขุดค้นอย่างจริงจังเป็นครั้งแรกปี พ.ศ.2515 ได้ขุดค้นเป็นครั้งที่ 2 ในครั้งนี้พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวและสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าพระบรมราชินีนาถได้เสด็จทอดพระเนตรแหล่งขุดค้นที่วัดโพธิ์ศรีในพร้อมกับแหล่งอื่นในบ้านเชียง และครั้งสุดท้ายปีพ.ศ. 2517-2518 กรมศิลปากรร่วมกับมหาวิทยาลัยเพนซิลเวเนีย ได้ร่วมมือขุดค้นและหาข้อมูลใหม่เพิ่มเติม โดยเรียกโครงการนี้ว่า " โครงการ โบราณคดีภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ " พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติแห่งชาติ บ้านเชียง จึงได้เริ่มจัดตั้งขึ้นมาตั้งแต่ปีพ.ศ. 2518 เป็นต้นมา
พ.ศ. 2524 สำนักงานศึกษาธิการจังหวัดอุดรธานี ร่วมกับกรมศิลปากร ได้ของบประมาณจากสำนักงานสลากกินแบ่งรัฐบาล มาสร้างอาคารหลังแรก แต่เนื่องจาก สภาพพื้นที่ยังเป็นที่ลุ่มน้ำท่วมถึงในฤดูฝน นายมีชัย ฤชพันธุ์ รัฐมนตรีประจำสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี ได้ขอเงินงบประมาณในโครงการเงิน กสช. มาปรับปรุงพื้นที่ให้สวยงาม และพรรคชาติไทยยังได้บริจาคต้นไม้ ไม้ดอก ไม้ประดับให้แก่พิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งชาติ บ้านเชียง ด้วยเช่นกัน
พ.ศ. 2525 ดร. สิปปนนท์ เกตุทัต อดีตรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ ได้ของบประมาณสร้างอาคารหลังที่ 2 จากมูลนิธิ จอร์น เอฟ เคเนดี แห่งประเทศไทย และกรมศิลปากรได้มีงบประมาณสนับสนุนด้านครุภัณฑ์ เป็นเงินรวมทั้งสิ้น 6,100,000 บาท เนื่องจากในวโรกาสสมเด็จ พระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนีมีพระชนมายุ 84 พรรษา กรมศิลปากร ได้กราบบังคมทูลพระบรมราชานุญาตใช้ชื่ออาคารหลังนี้ว่า "อาคารสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี" ทรงพระกรุณา โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอเจ้าฟ้ากัลยานิวัฒนา ทรงเป็นผู้แทนพระองค์เสด็จทรงเปิดพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ บ้านเชียง ในวันเสาร์ที่ 21 พฤศจิกายน 2530 พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ บ้านเชียง ปัจจุบันมีพื้นที่เพิ่มขึ้นเป็น 25 ไร่ คือ บริเวณพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ บ้านเชียง หลุมขุดค้นทางโบราณคดีวัดโพธิ์ศรีใน และบ้านไทพาน ด้วยเหตุผลที่คนบ้านเชียงยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ ได้มีหลักฐาน ชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ ที่บ่งบอกถึงวัฒนธรรมของคนยุคนั้น ให้คนรุ่นหลังได้เรียนรู้เป็นอย่างดี คณะกรรมการมรดกโลกได้ร่วมกันตกลงยอมรับให้ขึ้นบัญชี " แหล่งวัฒนธรรมบ้านเชียง "ไว้เป็นแหล่งหนึ่งในบรรดามรดกโลก เป็นอันดับที่ 4 ของประเทศไทย และเป็นอันดับที่ 359 ของโลก เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2535
