จังหวัดสตูล เป็นจังหวัดสุดเขตแดนใต้ของประเทศไทยทางชายฝั่งทะเลอันดามัน ซึ่งเป็นชายฝั่งทะเลทางด้าน ตะวันตกอยู่ระหว่างเส้นรุ้งที่ 6 องศา 4 ลิปดา และ 7 องศา 2 ลิปดาเหนือ และเส้นแวงที่ 99 องศา 5 ลิปดา และ 100 องศา 3 ลิปดาตะวันออก อยู่ห่างจากกรุงเทพมหานคร โดยเส้นทางรถยนต์ 973 กิโลเมตร มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 2,807.522 ตารางกิโลเมตร หรือเท่ากับ 1,754,701 ไร่ พื้นที่ส่วนที่เป็นเกาะประมาณ 105 เกาะ มีชายฝั่งทะเลยาว 144.80 กิโลเมตร มีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับจังหวัดใกล้เคียง ดังนี้

ทิศเหนือ ติดอำเภอรัตภูมิ จังหวัดสงขลา อำเภอป่าบอน จังหวัดพัทลุง และอำเภอปะเหลียนจังหวัดตรัง
ทิศตะวันออก ติดอำเภอสะเดา จังหวัดสงขลา และรัฐเปอร์ลิส ประเทศมาเลเซีย

ภูมิประเทศ
จังหวัดสตูลมีลักษณะเป็นพื้นที่ราบสลับกับภูเขา โดยทิศเหนือและทิศตะวันออกเป็นเนินเขาและภูเขามากมาย สลับซับซ้อน มีเทือกเขาที่สำคัญแบ่งเขตประเทศไทยและประเทศมาเลเซีย คือ เทือกเขาบรรทัด เทือกเขาสันกาลาคีรี พื้นที่ค่อยๆ ลาดลงสู่ทะเลทางทิศตะวันตกและทิศใต้ โดยยังมีภูเขาน้อยใหญ่อยู่กระจัดกระจายในตอนล่าง ภูเขาที่สำคัญได้แก่ เขาจีน เขาบารัง เขาใหญ่ เขาทะนาน และเขาพญาวัง
ภูมิอากาศ
พื้นที่จังหวัดสตูลได้รับอิทธิพลจากลมมรสุมตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือที่พัดผ่านอ่าวไทย และลมมรสุมตะวันตกเฉียงใต้จากมหาสมุทรอินเดีย ลักษณะภูมิอากาศเป็นแบบร้อนชื้น มี 2 ฤดู คือฤดูร้อนกับฤดูฝน โดยมีช่วงฤดูฝนที่ยาวนานระหว่างเดือนพฤษภาคมถึงธันวาคมและมีช่วงฤดูร้อนเพียง 4 เดือน คือเดือนมกราคมถึงเดือนเมษายน ระหว่างปี 2545 -2549 ปริมาณน้ำฝนเฉลี่ย ประมาณ 2,223.2 มม. ตกชุกที่สุดในช่วงเดือนกันยายน-ตุลาคม อุณหภูมิสูงสุดเฉลี่ย 33.05 องศาเซลเซียส อุณหภูมิต่ำสุดเฉลี่ย 23.84 องศาเซลเซียสอุณหภูมิสูงสุดวัดได้ 37.4 องศาเซลเซียสเมื่อเดือนมีนาคม 2549 และอุณหภูมิต่ำสุดวัดได้ 20.0 องศาเซลเซียสเมื่อเดือนมกราคม 2549
