การพยาบาลเป็นการปฏิบัติโดยตรงต่อบุคคล ครอบครัว ชุมชนและสังคม นับได้ว่าเป็นบริการในระดับสถาบันของสังคม ดังนั้นผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพพยาบาลจึงต้องเป็นผู้ที่มีความรับผิดชอบสูง เป็นผู้ที่ไว้วางใจได้ มีความรู้ความชำนาญในการปฏิบัติ มีจริยธรรม และจรรยาบรรณวิชาชีพ เป็นแนวทางในการประพฤติและปฏิบัติ ทั้งนี้เพื่อความปลอดภัยของสังคมโดยส่วนรวม

1.จรรยาบรรณวิชาชีพ

จรรยาบรรณวิชาชีพสำหรับพยาบาลเป็นการประมวลหลักความประพฤติให้บุคคลในวิชาชีพยึดถือปฏิบัติ สมาคมพยาบาลแห่งสหรัฐอเมริกา (The America Nurses Associations A.N.A.) ได้กำหนดสาระสำคัญของจรรยาบรรณวิชาชีพพยาบาลไว้ดังนี้

4) พยาบาลมีหน้าที่รับผิดชอบในการตัดสินใจและให้การพยาบาลแก่ผู้ป่วยแต่ละราย
5) พยาบาลพึงดำรงไว้ซึ่งสมรรถนะในการปฏิบัติการพยาบาล
6) พยาบาลพึงตัดสินใจด้วยความรอบคอบถี่ถ้วน ใช้ข้อมูลสมรรถนะและคุณสมบัติอื่นๆ เป็นหลักในการขอคำปรึกษาหารือ ยอมรับในหน้าที่ความรับผิดชอบ รวมถึง การมอบหมายกิจกรรมการปฏิบัติการพยาบาลให้ผู้อื่นปฏิบัติ
7) พยาบาลพึงมีส่วนร่วมและสนับสนุนในกิจกรรมการพัฒนาความรู้เชิงวิชาชีพ
8) พยาบาลพึงมีส่วนร่วมและสนับสนุนในการพัฒนาวิชาชีพและส่งเสริมมาตรฐานการปฏิบัติการพยาบาล

11) พยาบาลพึงร่วมมือและเป็นเครือข่ายกับสมาชิกด้านสุขภาพอนามัยและบุคคลอื่นๆในสังคมเพื่อส่งเสริมชุมชนและสนองตอบความต้องการด้านสุขภาพอนามัยของสังคมสำหรับสมาคมพยาบาลแห่งประเทศไทย ได้กำหนดจรรยาบรรณวิชาชีพของสมาคม พ.ศ. 2528 มุ่งเน้นให้พยาบาลได้ประพฤติปฏิบัติหน้าที่ความรับผิดชอบ โดยกำหนดเป็นความรับผิดชอบต่อประชาชน ความรับผิดชอบต่อประเทศชาติ ต่อผู้ร่วมวิชาชีพและต่อตนเองดังนี้

1. ประกอบวิชาชีพด้วยความมีสติ ตระหนักในคุณค่าและศักดิ์ศรีของความเป็นมนุษย์
2. ปฏิบัติต่อประชาชนด้วยความเสมอภาคตามสิทธิมนุษยชน โดยไม่คำนึงถึง เชื้อชาติ ศาสนา และสถานภาพของบุคคล
3. ละเว้นการปฏิบัติที่มีอคติ และการใช้อำนาจหน้าที่เพื่อผลประโยชน์ส่วนตน
4. พึงเก็บรักษาเรื่องส่วนตัวของผู้รับบริการไว้เป็นความลับ เว้นแต่ด้วยความยินยอมของผู้นั้นหรือเมื่อต้องปฏิบัติตามกฎหมาย
5. พึงปฏิบัติหน้าที่โดยใช้ความรู้ความสามารถอย่างเต็มที่ในการวินิจฉัยและการแก้ไขปัญหาสุขภาพอนามัยอย่างเหมาะสมแก่สภาพของบุคคล ครอบครัว และชุมชน
6. พึงป้องกันภยันตรายอันจะมีผลต่อสุขภาพอนามัยของประชาชน
