องค์พระปฐมเจดีย์ เป็นปูชนียสถานอันสำคัญของประเทศไทย อยู่ภายในวัดพระปฐมเจดีย์ราชวรมหาวิหาร มีประวัติความเป็นมายาวนานในแผ่นดินสุวรรณภูมิ เป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระบรมสารีริกธาตุขององค์พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า
องค์พระปฐมเจดีย์ เป็นพระเจดีย์ใหญ่ รูประฆังคว่ำ ปากผายมหึมา โครงสร้างเป็นไม้ซุง รัดด้วยโซ่เส้นมหึมาก่ออิฐ ถือปูน ประดับด้วยกระเบื้องปูทับ ประกอบด้วยวิหาร 4 ทิศ กำแพงแก้ว 2 ชั้น เป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ของพระพุทธเจ้า เป็นที่เคารพสักการบูชาของบรรดาพุทธศาสนิกชนทั่วโลก ทางวัดกำหนดให้มีงานเทศกาลนมัสการองค์พระปฐมเจดีย์ ในวันขึ้น 12 ค่ำ เดือน 12 ถึง วันแรม 5 ค่ำ เดือน 12 รวม 9 วัน 9 คืน เป็น ประจำทุกปี
ประวัติองค์พระปฐมเจดีย์[แก้]
องค์พระปฐมเจดีย์ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5
พระปฐมเจดีย์ หรือเดิมเรียกว่า พระธมเจดีย์ มีฐานะเป็นมหาธาตุหลวง ของแผ่นดินสุวรรณภูมิ ทั้งนี้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว มีพระราชวินิจฉัยว่า พระธมเจดีย์องค์นี้ อาจเป็นเจดีย์ที่สร้างขึ้น เมื่อคราวที่พระสมณทูต ในพระเจ้าอโศกมหาราช เดินทางมาเผยแผ่ศาสนายังสุวรรณภูมิ ก็เป็นได้ เพราะพระเจดีย์เดิม มีลักษณะทรงโอคว่ำ หรือทรงมะนาวผ่าซีก แบบเดียวกับพระสถูปสาญจี แต่ปรากฏว่ามียอดเป็นแบบปรางค์ ซึ่งพระองค์ฯ มีพระราชวินิจฉัยว่า อาจมีเจ้านายพระองค์ใดมาบูรณะไว้ก็เป็นได้ ซึ่งตรงกับความในศิลาจารึกหลักที่ 2 (ศิลาจารึกวัดศรีชุม) ของ พระมหาเถรศรีศรัทธาฯ อันได้กล่าวไว้ว่า พระมหาเถรศรีศรัทธาฯ ท่านทรงได้แวะมาบูรณะพระธมเจดีย์องค์นี้ ก่อนที่ท่านจะเดินทางกลับเมืองราด เมื่อคราวที่ท่านเสด็จกลับจากศึกษาพระพุทธศาสนาที่ลังกา ทั้งนี้ พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว จึงพระราชทานนามใหม่ว่า พระปฐมเจดีย์ ด้วยทรงเชื่อ ว่านี่คือเจดีย์แห่งแรกของสุวรรณภูมิ นั่นเอง
ในเรื่องนี้ นักประวัติศาสตร์ และนักโบราณคดีบางท่าน ได้ระบุว่า พระปฐมเจดีย์ไม่ได้เป็นเจดีย์ที่เก่าที่สุดของสุวรรณภูมิ แต่เป็น พระมหาธาตุหลวง ในยุคทวารวดี มากกว่า เนื่องด้วยเหตุผลประกอบหลายประการ โดยเฉพาะ การค้นพบเจดีย์ ที่มีอายุเก่าแก่กว่าพระธมเจดีย์ และหลักฐานลายลักษณ์อักษร ที่ระบุว่า " พระเจดีย์องค์นี้ เดิม ขอมเรียก พระธม " ซึ่งไม่ว่าจะเป็นชาวขอมจริงๆ หรือชาวลวรัฐ ซึ่งสมัยนั้นเราก็เรียกว่าขอม เช่น ขอมสบาดโขลญลำพง คำว่า ธม สำหรับชาวขอมนั้น แปลว่า ใหญ่ ตรงกับคำเมืองว่า หลวง ซึ่งเราก็เรียกพระนครธม ว่า พระนครหลวง ด้วยเหตุผลเดียวกัน
นอกจากนี้พระบรมราชสรีรางคาร รัชกาลที่ 6 พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว บรรจุที่ฐานพระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์ พระปฐมเจดีย์ จังหวัดนครปฐม และฐานพระพุทธชินสีห์ วัดบวรนิเวศวิหาร ตามที่มีพระบรมราชโองการสั่งไว้ในพระราชพินัยกรรม ต่อมา ในพุทธศักราช 2529 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลปัจจุบัน ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เชิญพระอังคารของ พระนางเจ้าสุวัทนา พระวรราชเทวีในรัชกาลที่ 6 ไปบรรจุไว้เคียงข้างพระบรมราชสรีรางคารรัชกาลที่ 6 ที่ใต้ฐานพระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์ ต่อมา ใน พุทธศักราช 2555 พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้อัญเชิญพระสรีรางคาร ของ สมเด็จพระเจ้าภคินีเธอ เจ้าฟ้าเพชรรัตนราชสุดา สิริโสภาพัณณวดี ไปบรรจุไว้เคียงข้างพระบรมราชสรีรางคารรัชกาลที่6 และพระราชสรีรางคารพระนางเจ้าสุวัทนา พระวรราชเทวี ที่ใต้ฐานพระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์

ปี พ.ศ. 2451 พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฏเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 6 เมื่อครั้งดำรงพระอิสริยยศเป็น สมเด็จพระยุพราช เสด็จประพาสหัวเมืองฝ่ายเหนือได้ทอดพระเนตร พระพุทธรูปโบราณเป็นอันมาก แต่มีพระพุทธรูปองค์หนึ่งที่เมืองศรีสัชนาลัย (จังหวัดสุโขทัย) กอปรด้วยพระลักษณะงามเป็นที่ต้องพระราชหฤทัย แต่ชำรุดมากเหลืออยู่แต่พระเศียร พระหัตถ์และพระบาท จึงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้อัญเชิญลงมากรุงเทพฯ แล้วให้ช่างปั้นสถาปนาขึ้นมาบริบูรณ์เต็มพระองค์ และโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้จัดการพระราชพิธีเททองหล่อขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 30 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2456 ณ วัดพระเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม กรุงเทพมหานครฯ
พระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์ เป็นที่เคารพบูชาของ พุทธศาสนิกชนชาวไทยทั่วไป ชื่อเต็มก็คือ พระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์ ศรีอินทราทิตย์ ธรรโมภาส มหาวชิราวุธ ราชปูชนียบพิตร ตามประกาศกระแสพระบรมราชโองการ ลงวันที่ 12 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2466 แต่ประชาชนทั่วไป จะเรียกว่า หลวงพ่อพระร่วง หรือ พระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์
พระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์ มีขนาดความสูงวัดจากพระบาทถึงพระเกศ 7.42 เมตร หรือราว 12 ศอก 4 นิ้ว เป็นพระพุทธรูปปางห้ามญาติ ศิลปะแบบสุโขทัย ประทับยืนอยู่บนฐาน โลหะทองเหลืองลายบัวคว่ำบัวหงาย ทำวงพระพักตร์ตามยาว พระหนุเสี้ยมนิ้วพระหัตถ์ และพระบาทไม่เสมอกัน ห้อยพระหัตถ์ซ้ายลงข้างพระวรกาย แบฝ่าพระหัตถ์ขวายกตั้งขึ้น ยื่นออกไปข้างหน้าระดับพระอุระ เป็นกิริยาห้าม มีพระอุทรพลุ้ยออกมา ห่มจีวรบางคลุม แนบติดพระวรกาย บ่ายพระพักตร์สู่ทิศเหนือ ทำด้วยโลหะทองเหลือง หนัก 100 หาบ
การอัญเชิญพระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์ เมื่อเดือนกรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2457 จำเป็นต้องแยกชิ้นมาและมาประกอบเข้าด้วย กันที่จังหวัดนครปฐมแล้วเสร็จเป็นองค์สมบูรณ์ เมื่อวันที่ 2 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2458 หลังจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฏเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เสด็จสวรรคตแล้วตามความในพระราชพินัยกรรมของพระองค์ระบุว่าให้ บรรจุพระบรมราชสรีรางคารของพระองค์ไว้ใต้ฐานพระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์ ที่องค์พระ ปฐมเจดีย์ วันที่ 31 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2469 จึงได้ทำพิธีบรรจุ พระบรมราชสรีรังคาร ณ ใต้ฐานพระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์ ศรีอินทราทิตย์ ธรรโมภาส มหาวชิราวุธ ราชปูชนียบพิตร ตาม พระประสงค์ทุกประการ ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2529 หลังจากการพระราชทานเพลิงพระศพพระนางเจ้าสุวัทนา พระวรราชเทวี พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงโปรดเกล้าให้อัญเชิญพระสรีรางคาร มาประดิษฐานไว้เคียงข้างพระบรมราชสรีรางคารของพระสวามี และในปี พ.ศ. 2555 หลังจากพระราชพิธีพระราชทานเพลิงพระศพสมเด็จพระเจ้าภคินีเธอ เจ้าฟ้าเพชรรัตนราชสุดา สิริโสภาพัณณวดี พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงโปรดเกล้าให้อัญเชิญพระสรีรางคาร มาประดิษฐานไว้เคียงข้างพระบรมราชสรีรางคารของพระชนกนาถ และ พระสรีรางคารของพระชนนี ถึงในพระราชพินัยกรรมให้บรรจุพระบรมราชสรีรางคาร ไว้ใต้ฐานของพระร่วงโรจนฤทธิ์ แต่ในเวลาจริงแล้วพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงให้ประด
