ประวัติ
อุ้มผางในอดีตเป็นที่อยู่ของชาวเขาเผ่ากะเหรี่ยง ต่อมาก็มีคนไทยจากภาคเหนือคือ เชียงใหม่ ลำปาง ลำพูน แพร่ ได้อพยพหาที่ทำกินใหม่มาบุกเบิกป่าอุ้มผางเป็นที่อยู่อาศัย และเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2432 ได้ถูกกำหนดให้เป็นเมืองหน้าด่านชายแดนตะวันตกในชื่อ อำเภอแม่กลอง ขึ้นตรงกับจังหวัดอุทัยธานี เป็นจุดตรวจตราชาวพม่าที่เดินทางเข้ามาค้าขายในประเทศไทย โดยมีเจ้าหน้าที่คอยตรวจเอกสารเดินทาง

พ.ศ. 2469 ทางการได้ยุบอำเภอแม่กลองเป็น กิ่งอำเภอแม่กลอง และโอนการปกครองจากจังหวัดอุทัยธานีให้ไปขึ้นกับจังหวัดกำแพงเพชร และในปี พ.ศ. 2499 ได้ย้ายที่ว่าการอำเภอไปอยู่บ้านอุ้มผางพร้อมเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น กิ่งอำเภออุ้มผาง ในวันที่ 22 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2502 ทางการได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกายกฐานะจากกิ่งอำเภอเป็น อำเภออุ้มผาง และให้ขึ้นกับจังหวัดตาก[1]

พ.ศ. 2514 พรรคคอมมิวนิสต์แห่งประเทศไทยได้เริ่มการเคลื่อนไหวทางการเมือง มีการสู้รบกันบ้างระหว่างเจ้าหน้าที่ของรัฐคือตำรวจตระเวนชายแดน น.ป.พ. และ อ.ส. ช่วง พ.ศ. 2527 เหตุการณ์ได้ยุติลงด้วยการใช้นโยบาย 66/2523 มีมวลชนที่กลับใจและเข้ามามอบตัวเป็นผู้ร่วมพัฒนาชาติไทยประมาณสองพันกว่าคน ความสงบสุขจึงกลับมาสู่ชาวอุ้มผางอีกครั้ง

หลังจากเป็นเมืองปิดมาช้านาน ทางการได้ทำการตัดถนนจากอำเภอแม่สอดสู่อำเภออุ้มผาง ลัดเลาะตามไหล่เขาและสันเขา 164 กิโลเมตร ซึ่งเป็นที่มาของชื่อถนนสายลอยฟ้า ระยะทางก่อสร้างกว่า 10 ปี เสร็จสิ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2526 [2]
