ประเพณี บวชลูกแก้ว
ประเพณีปอยส่างลอง หรือ งานบวชลูกแก้ว เพื่อทำการบรรพชาเป็นสามเณรในพระพุทธศาสนา โดยจะพบเห็นการจัดปอยส่างลองกันมากที่จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน โดยเฉพาะในเขตอำเภอเมือง อำเภอขุนยวม และอำเภอปาย คนส่วนใหญ่ที่เข้าร่วมประเพณีนี้ก็สืบเชื้อสายมาจากไทใหญ่ ซึ่งก็ได้ร่วมกันสืบทอดงานประเพณีนี้มาเป็นเวลาช้านาน ดังปรากฏว่าหลักฐานว่าประเพณีนี้มีมาตั้งแต่มีการสร้างแปลนเมืองแม่ฮ่องสอน ซึ่งก็ ได้มีการจัดงานอย่างยิ่งใหญ่ทุกๆปี เนื่องจากเป็นประเพณีที่สำคัญทางศาสนา และเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของจังหวัด
จนกระทั่งในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 ได้เกิดความขัดแย้งในวงกว้าง ครอบคลุมทุกทวีปและประเทศส่วนใหญ่ในโลกรวมทั้งในประเทศไทยในปี พ.ศ. 2482 (ค.ศ. 1939) จนกระทั่งสิ้นสุดในปี พ.ศ. 2488 (ค.ศ. 1945) ในระหว่างนั้นประเทศไทยได้ประสบปัญหาทางด้านต่างๆ ทั้งการเมือง เศรษฐกิจ และสังคม ทำให้ประเพณีปอยส่างลองถูกงดและเลิกไป จนกระทั่งเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2525 อันเป็นปีฉลองกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ครบ 200 ปี ก็ได้มีการฟื้นฟูและจัดงานประเพณีปอยส่างลองขึ้นทุกๆปีจนถึงปัจจุบัน และประเพณีนี้ก็ได้ขยายไปยังจังหวัดใกล้เคียง คือ จังหวัดเชียงราย และจังหวัดเชียงใหม่อีกด้วย

ประวัติความเป็นมาของประเพณีปอยส่างลองมีกล่าวกันไว้หลากหลายตำนานแตกต่างกันไปตามพื้นที่ ซึ่งก็ปรากฏตำนานต่างๆกันดังนี้

เมื่อครั้งพุทธกาลนั้นพระพุทธเจ้าได้ขึ้นไปโปรดพระมารดาที่สวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ เมื่อจะเสด็จกลับลงมาเมืองมนุษย์ก็มีเทพสี่ตนเป็นเทวดา 2 ตน นางฟ้า 2 ตนลงตามมาด้วย เพราะอยากเห็นบ้านเมืองมนุษย์มากเนื่องจากว่าคิดว่าบ้านเมืองมนุษย์นั้นต้องสนุกสนานมากเพราะจะมีงานต้อนรับพระมารดาของพระพุทธเจ้า ดังนั้นเทพทั้งสี่จึงได้แต่งกายสวยงามสวมชฎามงกุฎ ฟ้อนรำร่วมกันกับมนุษย์ เพราะฉะนั้นถ้ามีงานปอยส่างลองจึงให้ส่างลองแต่งกายอย่างสวยงาม มีการนำชฎามาสวมใส่ให้แก่ผู้บวชอย่างสวยงามตามที่ตำนานได้กล่าวมาดังข้างต้น
ตำนานที่สอง
ตำนานนี้นั้นกล่าวไว้ว่า การเป็นส่างลองนั้นเป็นการเลียนแบบประวัติของพระพุทธเจ้าตอนที่เป็นเจ้าชายสิทธัตถะครองกรุงกบิลพัสดุ์ก่อนจะออกผนวช การกระทำทุกอย่างในช่วงเวลาการเป็นส่างลองจะปฏิบัติเสมือนการปฏิบัติต่อพระมหากษัตริย์นั่นเอง
