ความหมายของสมุนไพร

คำว่า สมุนไพร ตามพจนานุกรมฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน พ.ศ. 2525 หมายถึง ในทางพืชที่ใช้ ทำเป็นเครื่องยา สมุนไพรกำเนิดมาจากธรรมชาติและมีความหมายต่อชีวิตมนุษย์โดยเฉพาะ สุขภาพ อันหมายถึงทั้งการส่งเสริมสุขภาพและการรักษาโรค ความหมายของยาสมุนไพรในพระราชบัญญัติยา พ.ศ. 2510 ได้ระบุว่า ยาสมุนไพร หมายความว่า ยาที่ได้จากพฤกษาชาติสัตว์หรือแร่ธาตุ ซึ่งมิได้ผสมปรุงหรือแปรสภาพ เช่น พืชก็ยังเป็นส่วนของราก ลำต้น ใบ ดอก ผลฯลฯ ซึ่งมิได้ผ่านขั้นตอนการแปรรูปใด ๆ แต่ในทางการค้า สมุนไพรมักจะถูกดัดแปลงในรูปแบบต่าง ๆ เช่น ถูกหั่นให้เป็นชิ้นเล็กลง บดเป็นผงละเอียด หรืออัดเป็นแท่งแต่ในความรู้สึกของคนทั่วไปเมื่อกล่าวถึงสมุนไพร มักนึกถึงเฉพาะต้นไม้ที่นำมาใช้เป็นยาเท่านั้น

2. ยาสมุนไพร หมายถึงยาที่ได้จากพืชสัตว์แร่ธาตุที่ยังมิได้ผสมปรุงหรือแปรสภาพสมุนไพรนอก จากจะใช้เป็นยาแล้ว ยังใช้ประโยชน์เป็นอาหาร ใช้เตรียมเป็นเครื่องดื่ม ใช้เป็นอาหารเสริม เป็นส่วนประกอบในเครื่องสำอาง ใช้แต่งกลิ่น แต่งสีอาหารและยา ตลอดจนใช้เป็นยาฆ่าแมลงอีกด้วย ในทางตรงกันข้าม มีสมุนไพรจำนวนไม่น้อยที่มีพิษ ถ้าใช้ไม่ถูกวิธีหรือใช้เกินขนาดจะมีพิษถึงตายได้ ดังนั้นการใช้สมุนไพรจึงควรใช้ด้วยความระมัดระวังและใช้อย่างถูกต้อง ปัจจุบันมีการตื่นตัวในการนำสมุนไพรมาใช้พัฒนาประเทศมากขึ้น สมุนไพรเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในแผนพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสังคมแห่งชาติ กระทรวงสาธารณสุขได้ดำเนิน โครงการ สมุนไพรกับสาธารณสุขมูลฐาน โดยเน้นการนำสมุนไพรมาใช้บำบัดรักษาโรคใน สถานบริการสาธารณสุขของรัฐมากขึ้น และ ส่งเสริมให้ปลูกสมุนไพรเพื่อใช้ภายในหมู่บ้านเป็นการสนับสนุนให้มีการใช้ สมุนไพรมากยิ่งขึ้น อันเป็นวิธีหนึ่งที่จะช่วยประเทศชาติประหยัดเงินตราในการสั่งซื้อยาสำเร็จ รูปจากต่างประเทศได้ปีละเป็นจำนวนมาก

สมุนไพรหมายถึง“พืชที่ใช้ทำเป็นเครื่องยา” ส่วน ยาสมุนไพร หมายถึง “ยาที่ได้จากส่วนของพืช สัตว์ และแร่ ซึ่งยังมิได้ผสมปรุง หรือ แปรสภาพ” ส่วนการนำมาใช้ อาจดัดแปลงรูปลักษณะของสมุนไพรให้ใช้ได้สะดวกขึ้น เช่น นำมาหั่นให้มีขนาดเล็กลง หรือ นำมาบดเป็นผงเป็นต้นมีแต่พืชเพียงอย่างเดียวหามิได้เพราะยังมีสัตว์และแร่ ธาตุอื่นๆอีกสมุนไพร ที่เป็นสัตว์ได้แก่ เขา หนัง กระดูก ดี หรือเป็นสัตว์ทั้งตัวก็มี เช่น ตุ๊กแกไส้เดือน ม้าน้ำ ฯลฯ

"พืชสมุนไพร" นั้นตั้งแต่โบราณก็ทราบกันดีว่ามีคุณค่าทางยามากมายซึ่ง เชื่อกันอีกด้วยว่า ต้นพืชต่างๆ ก็เป็นพืชที่มีสารที่เป็นตัวยาด้วยกันทั้งสิ้นเพียงแต่ว่าพืชชนิดไหนจะมีคุณ ค่าทางยามากน้อยกว่ากันเท่านั้น
"พืชสมุนไพร" หรือวัตถุธาตุนี้ หรือตัวยาสมุนไพรนี้ แบ่งออกเป็น 5 ประการ
1. รูป ได้แก่ ใบไม้ ดอกไม้ เปลือกไม้ แก่นไม้ กระพี้ไม้ รากไม้ เมล็ด
2. สี มองแล้วเห็นว่าเป็นสีเขียวใบไม้ สีเหลือง สีแดง สีส้ม สีม่วง สีน้ำตาล สีดำ
3. กลิ่น ให้รู้ว่ามรกลิ่น หอม เหม็น หรือกลิ่นอย่างไร

5. ชื่อ ต้องรู้ว่ามีชื่ออะไรในพืชสมุนไพรนั้นๆ ให้รู้ว่า ขิงเป็นอย่างไร ข่า เป็นอย่างไร ใบขี้เหล็กเป็นอย่างไร

ประวัติการใช้สมุนไพรไทยในประเทศไทย
