พันธุ์ข้าวที่ได้รับพระมหากรุณาธิคุณจากสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯพระบรมราชินีนาถพระองค์ท่านทรงมีพระราชดำริเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2543 ให้โครงการฟาร์มตัวอย่างตามพระราชดำริฯ จังหวัดพัทลุง ศูนย์วิจัยข้าวพัทลุง ได้ดำเนินการปลูกข้าวพันธุ์สังข์หยด ในพื้นที่แปลงนา ศูนย์วิจัยข้าวพัทลุง ต่อมาเมื่อวันที่ 24 กันยายน 2546 สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถเสด็จไปยังฟาร์มตัวอย่างตามพระราชดำริ จังหวัดพัทลุง ครั้งนั้น ศูนย์วิจัยข้าวพัทลุงได้ถวายข้าวสังข์หยด ซึ่งทรงนำมาเสวย ทรงรับสั่งว่าอร่อย ทรงโปรดให้นำข้าวสังข์หยดกลับมาปลูกใหม่เพื่อเผยแพร่ และรักษาพันธุ์ข้าว ต่อมาในวโรกาสเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา 72 พรรษา ทรงโปรดให้นำเมล็ดพันธุ์ข้าวสังข์หยด เผยแพร่กับประชาชนที่ศูนย์การประชุมแห่งชาติสิริกิติ์ และในปีนี้ (2548) ศูนย์ศิลปาชีพได ้นำข้าวสังข์หยดมาแนะนำ และเผยแพร่ ในงานจำหน่ายผลิตภัณฑ์ศิลปาชีพใน วันที่ 15-31 กรกฎาคม นี้
