รัฐธรรมนูญฉบับวันที่ 1 มกราคม 2527

รัฐธรรมนูญฉบับวันที่ 1 มกราคม 2527 กำหนดให้สมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีทรงเป็นอธิปัตย์ คือ เป็นทั้งประมุขและนายกรัฐมนตรี
สมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีองค์ปัจจุบันยังทรงดำรงตำแหน่งรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงกลาโหมและกระทรวงการคลังอีกด้วย ทั้งนี้
นายกรัฐมนตรีจะต้องเป็นชาวบรูไนฯ เชื้อสายมาเลย์โดยกำเนิดและจะต้องนับถือศาสนาอิสลามนิกายสุหนี่
- ปัจจุบันมีพรรคการเมืองที่ถูกต้องตามกฎหมายเพียงพรรคเดียวคือ พรรค Parti Perpaduan Kebangsaan Brunei
(PPKB) ซึ่งมีความสัมพันธ์ที่ดีกับรัฐบาลแต่ไม่มีบทบาทนัก โดยรัฐบาลบรูไน ฯ เห็นว่าไม่มีความจำเป็นต้องมีพรรคการเมือง

- ในปี 2548 สมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีฯ ทรงประกาศปรับคณะรัฐมนตรีครั้งสำคัญในรอบ 22 ปี โดยทรงแต่งตั้งมกุฎราชกุมารอัล มูห์ทาดี บิลลาห์ ให้ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งรัฐมนตรีอาวุโสประจำสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี ซึ่งบ่งชี้ถึงแนวทางการสืบทอดอำนาจ ในการบริหารประเทศในอนาคต นอกจากนี้ ได้มีการปรับเปลี่ยนรัฐมนตรีโดยได้เปิดโอกาสให้นักธุรกิจที่มีความชำนาญและผู้ที่ไม่ได้เป็นมุสลิม เข้าดำรงตำแหน่งสำคัญในคณะรัฐมนตรีเป็นครั้งแรก สะท้อนให้เห็นว่าสมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีฯ ทรงให้ความสำคัญต่อภาคเศรษฐกิจ ภาคพลังงาน รวมทั้งการพัฒนาประเทศให้เป็นมุสลิมสายกลางมากขึ้น เพื่อให้บรูไน ฯ มีความเจริญทัดเทียมนานาประเทศ
