จากความหมายของสิ่งแวดล้อมดังกล่าวสามารถแบ่งสิ่งแวดล้อมได้เป็น 2 ประเภท คือ สิ่งแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติ (Natural environment) และสิ่งแวดล้อมที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้น (Man-Mode Environment)

1. สิ่งแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติ ( Natural Environment)
แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภทย่อย คือ สิ่งแวดล้อมทางกายภาพ (หรือสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ไม่มีชีวิต) และสิ่งแวดล้อมที่มีชีวิต

1. 1สิ่งแวดล้อมทางกายภาพ (Physical Environment) หรือสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ไม่มีชีวิต (Abiotic Environment) แบ่งได้ดังนี้

- บรรยากาศ (Atmosphere) หมายถึงอากาศที่ห่อหุ้มโลก ประกอบด้วย กา๙ชนิดต่างๆ เช่น โอโซน ไนโตรเจน ออกซิเจน อาร์กอน คาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ ฝุ่นละออง และไอน้ำ

- อุทกภาค (Hydrosphere) หมายถึงส่วนที่เป็นน้ำทั้งหมดของพื้นผิวโลก ได้แก่ มหาสมุทร ทะเล แม่น้ำ ฯลฯ

- ธรณีภาค หรือ เปลือกโลก(Lithosphere) หมายถึง ส่วนของโลกที่เป็นของแข็งห่อหุ้มอยู่รอบนอกสุด ของโลกประกอบด้วยหินและดิน

1.2 สิ่งแวดล้อมที่มีชีวิต (Biotic Environment)ได้แก่ พืช สัตว์ และมนุษย์

2 . สิ่งแวดล้อมที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้น(Man-Mode Environment)
แบ่งได้ 2 ประเภทดังนี้

- สิ่งแวดล้อมที่เป็นรูปธรรม (Concrete Environment) ได้แก่ บ้านเรือน ถนน สนามบิน เขื่อน โรงงาน วัด

- สิ่งแวดล้อมที่เป็นนามธรรม (Abstract Environment) ได้แก่ ขนบธรรมเนียม ประเพณี วัฒนธรรม ศาสนา กฎหมายระบบเศรษฐกิจ การเมือง การปกครอง เป็นต้น

มิติของสิ่งแวดล้อม

องค์ประกอบพื้นฐานทางของมิติสิ่งแวดล้อมแบ่งได้เป็น 4 มิติ ดังนี้

1) มิติทรัพยากร
ทรัพยากร แบ่งได้ 2 ประเภท ดังนี้
ก. ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ หมายถึง สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นเอง หรือมีอยู่เองตามธรรมชาติ และให้ประโยชน์ต่อมนุษย์ไม่ทางใดก็ทางหนึ่ง ไดแก่ ป่าไม้ น้ำ ดิน ทุ่งหญ้า แบ่งเป็น3 กลุ่ม คือ
- ทรัพยากรที่ใช้ไม่หมด เช่น น้ำ อากาศ
- ทรัพยากรที่ทดแทนได้ เป็นทรัพยากรที่ใช้แล้วหมดไป แต่สามารถทดแทนได้โดยต้องใช้เวลาในการฟื้นตัว เช่น น้ำใช้ ดิน ป่าไม้
- ทรัพยากรที่ใช้แล้วหมดไป เป็นทรัพยากรที่เมื่อมีการใช้แล้วหมดไปไม่สามารถทดแทนได้ เช่น น้ำมัน ก๊าซธรรมชาติ ถ่านหิน แร่
ข. ทรัพยากรที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้น สามารถแบ่งได้เป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือ
- ทรัพยากรที่มีคุณค่าต่อการใช้ประโยชน์ของมนุษย์ เป็นทรัพยากรชีวภาพที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้น ได้แก่ การเกษตรกรรม อุตสาหกรรม การคมนาคมขนส่ง การสื่อสาร ประปา การใช้ที่ดิน
