ประวัติความเป็นมาของการแห่เทียนพรรษา
ในสมัยพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอกรมหลวงสรรพสิทธิ์ประสงค์ ซึ่งเป็นผู้สำเร็จราชการเมืองอุบล ครั้งหนึ่งที่เมืองอุบลมีการแห่บั้งไฟที่วัดกลาง มีประชาชนไปดูเป็นจำนวนมาก ครั้งนั้นในขบวนแห่บั้งไปได้เกิดมีการทะเลาะวิวาทและถึงแก่ความตาย เสด็จในกรมได้พิจารณาถึงความสูญเสียอันยิ่งใหญ่ จึงสั่งการให้เลิกแห่บั้งไฟและเปลี่ยนเป็นการแห่เทียนแทน

ต่อมาการทำต้นเทียนได้พัฒนาขึ้น เมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ. 2480 คือเป็นการหล่อเทียนออกจากแม่พิมพ์ที่มีลวดลายง่ายๆ หลายแบบ เช่น ตาอ้อย บัวคว่ำ กระจังก้ามปู และอื่นๆ แล้วนำไปติดที่ต้นเทียน ต่อมาก็มีบุคคลนำวิธีการดังกล่าวมาประยุกต์ใช้ รวมไปถึงการประดับประดาต้นเทียนด้วยลวดลายต่างๆ จนถึงขั้นจัดการประกวดและมีรางวัลสำหรับผู้ชนะเลิศอีกด้วย
