พระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆสร้างด้วยไม้สักทอ

พระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆสร้างด้วยไม้สักทองทั้งหลัง มีลักษณะทางสถาปัตยกรรมที่งดงามประณีตและได้รับอิทธิพลการก่อสร้างแบบตะวันตก การก่อสร้างแล้วเสร็จในเดือนมีนาคม พ.ศ. 2444 และได้เสด็จมาประทับที่พระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆ จนกระทั่งพระที่นั่งอัมพรสถาน ซึ่งโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้นใน พ.ศ. 2445 สร้างเสร็จเรียบร้อยใน พ.ศ. 2449 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวจึงได้เสด็จแปรพระราชฐานมาประทับที่พระที่นั่งอัมพรสถานเป็นการถาวร จนกระทั่งเสด็จสวรรคตเมื่อวันที่ 23 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2453 และพระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆยังคงเป็นสถานที่ประทับของเจ้านายจนกระทั่งสิ้นรัชกาล เจ้านายฝ่ายในและข้าราชบริพารจึงได้กลับมาประทับที่พระบรมมหาราชวัง

ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าอินทรศักดิศจี พระวรราชชายาประทับที่พระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆใน พ.ศ. 2468 แต่เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเสด็จสวรรคตเมื่อวันที่ 25 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2468 สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าอินทรศักดิศจี พระวรราชายา ก็ทรงย้ายออกจากพระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆ และจากนั้นมา พระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆก็มิได้เป็นพระราชฐานที่ประทับของเจ้านายอีก

ในรัชกาลปัจจุบัน พ.ศ. 2525 ซึ่งเป็นปีที่ฉลองกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ครบ 200 ปี สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ทรงขอพระบรมราชานุญาตซ่อมพระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆ เพื่อจัดเป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์ส่วนพระองค์ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ปัจจุบันพระที่นั่งวิมานเมฆเปิดเป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์ในความดูแลของสำนักพระราชวัง รวมทั้งหมู่พระตำหนักของพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ฝ่ายในด้วย
