แนวคิด พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ได้พัฒนาหลักปรัชญาเศรษฐกิจพอเพียงเพื่อที่จะให้พสกนิกรชาวไทยได้เข้าถึงทางสายกลางของชีวิตและเพื่อคงไว้ซึ่งทฤษฏีของการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน ทฤษฎีนี้เป็นพื้นฐานของการดำรงชีวิตซึ่งอยู่ระหว่าง สังคมระดับท้องถิ่นและตลอดระดับสากล จุดเด่นของแนวปรัชญานี้คือ แนวทางที่สมดุล โดยชาติสามารถทันสมัย และก้าวสู่ความเป็นสากลได้ โดยปราศจากการต่อต้านกระแสโลกาภิวัฒน์ และการอยู่รวมกันของทุกคนในสังคม

คำว่า “เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง” นั้นหากแปลเป็นอังกฤษจะได้ว่า Sufficiency Economy ซึ่งเป็นพระราชดำรัสที่องค์พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้พระราชทานแก่พสกนิกรชาวไทยไว้เมื่อประมาณ 25 ปีมาแล้ว อาจเรียกว่า เป็นทฤษฏีใหม่ก็ได้เพราะว่าเกิดจากแนวดำริที่พระองค์เป็นคนคิดค้นขึ้นมา เหตุที่เรียกว่า ทฤษฏีใหม่ก็เพราะว่า คำว่า“เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง”นั้น ไม่มีบัญญัติไว้ในพจนานุกรมมาก่อน พระองค์ทรงคิดขึ้นมาด้วยพระองค์เอง นับได้ว่าเป็นความอัจริยะภาพของพระองค์อย่างยิ่ง ทำให้เป็นที่ยอมรับกันทั่วโลก ในฐานะ“กษัตริย์นักปฏิรูป” หากจะกล่าวถึงคำว่า เศรษฐกิจพอเพียงนั้น เราอาจจะคิดว่ามันเป็นเรื่องไกลตัวเป็นเรื่องของเศรษฐกิจน้อย ใหญ่ เป็นเรื่องเชย เป็นเรื่องของชาวนา ชาวสวน แต่ผู้เขียนก็พึ่งจะเข้าใจนี่เองว่า เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง ไม่ได้สอนให้เราจน หรือว่า สอนให้เรามีเท่าไหร่ก็พอแค่นั้น ไม่หามาเพิ่ม ไม่ขวนขวายอีก อั้นนั้นก็ไม่ใช่สิ่งที่ต้องการ ปรัชญานี้สอนให้เรา เดินอยู่บนความพอดี อย่างเช่น ถ้าหากว่าเราเป็นคนจนมากๆ อยู่มาวันหนึ่ง มีคนพาเราไปกินอาหารภัตตาคารที่แพงที่สุดในโลก ได้กินอาหารรสเลิศ ..ถ้าเราเห็นแก่กินเกินไป คือ มีเท่าไหร่ก็กินให้หมด เอาให้คุ้ม พอกินไปกินมาลืมไปว่า กระเพาะเราก็มีความจุจำกัดเหมือนกัน กินซะจนกระเพาะแตกและตายในที่สุด …แต่หากว่า เราไม่โลภ รู้จักความพอดี เราก็จะกินแต่เพียงว่าอร่อย พออิ่มท้อง พอใจในอัตภาพที่กำลังเป็นอยู่ เราก็จะมีความสุขได้ ต่อมาก็ตรากตรำทำงานหาเงินเก็บ เอาไปลงทุนในทางที่สุจริต ซักวันเราก็รวยได้เหมือนกัน ..แต่ถ้าวันนั้นเรากินจนท้องแตกตายเสียก่อน เราก็ไม่มีโอกาสที่จะพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจ ไม่มีโอกาสที่จะยกระดับครอบครัวอีกแล้ว
