บึงบอระเพ็ด เป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวที่สวยงามที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งในประเทศไทย และเป็นบึงทะเลสาบน้ำจืดขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศไทย มีเนื้อที่ 132,737 ไร่ อยู่ในท้องที่สามอำเภอของจังหวัดนครสวรรค์ ได้แก่ อำเภอเมืองนครสวรรค์ อำเภอท่าตะโก และอำเภอชุมแสง เป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวที่สำคัญของจังหวัดนครสวรรค์ กลางบึงมีตำหนักแพที่สร้างขึ้นครั้งพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเสด็จพระราชดำเนินแปรพระราชฐาน เดิมบึงบอระเพ็ดแห่งนี้มีชื่อว่า "ทะเลเหนือ" หรือ "จอมบึง" เนื่องจากมีสัตว์และพันธุ์พืชน้ำเป็นจำนวนมาก รวมทั้งจระเข้ จากการสำรวจพบว่ามีสัตว์อาศัยอยู่ประมาณ 148 ชนิด พืช 44 ชนิด
