ดาวเทียมสำรวจทรัพยากรธรรมชาติดวงแรกของโลกชื่อ แลนด์แซท-1 สร้างโดยองค์การบริหารการบินพลเรือนและอวกาศสหรัฐอเมริกา ( NASA ) ส่งขึ้นไปอยู่ในอวกาศ โดยโคจรรอบโลกเพื่อสำรวจและบันทึกข้อมูลของโลกเมื่อ 23 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2515 ต่อมาได้มีการส่ง Landsat-2 , 3 , 4 ในปี 2518 , 2525 ตามลำดับ และเมื่อวันที่ 1 มีนาคม 2527 ได้ส่ง Landsat 5 ซึ่งเป็นดาวเทียมดวงเดียวที่ยังคงเหลือและกำลังปฏิบัติงานอยู่ ดาวเทียมแลนด์แซท-5 มีน้ำหนัก 2,150 กิโลกรัม โคจรสัมพันธ์กับดวงอาทิตย์เป็นวงกลม ผ่านขั้วโลกทำมุมเอียง 99 องศาที่ความสูง 705 กิโลเมตร โคจรรอบโลกใช้เวลา 99 หรือ 14 รอบต่อวันและจะโคจรกลับมาที่เดิมทุก 16 วัน ดาวเทียมบันทึกภาพครอบคลุมประเทศไทยในแนวโคจร 7 แนว หรือประมาณ 40 ภาพ ใช้เวลาบันทึก 7 วัน มีระบบบันทึกภาพ 2 ระบบ คือระบบกวาดหลายช่วงคลื่น MSS จำนวน 4 ช่องคลื่นและระบบ TM จำนวน 7 คลื่น และมีระบบสื่อสารพิเศษ TDRS ที่สามารถส่งข้อมูลขณะเวลาถ่ายภาพสู่สถานีรับได้ทันที มีสถานีรับภาพทั่วโลก ถ่ายภาพภูมิประเทศ ภาพขยายสถานที่ ตัวเมือง เขื่อน บันทึกข้อมูลเป็นตัวเลข สามารถเลือกใช้ข้อมูลที่บันทึกไว้แล้วหรือขอให้มีการบันทึกข้อมูลล่วงหน้า
