สิ่งแวดล้อมศึกษาเป็นกระบวนการทางการศึกษา เพื่อพัฒนาประชากรให้เกิดความรู้ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับสิ่งแวดล้อม ให้มีความตระหนักต่อปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม และสำนึกในคุณค่าของทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ มุ่งพัฒนาศักยภาพของมนุษย์ให้มีความชำนาญเกี่ยวกับการแก้ไขปัญหา พร้อมที่จะมีส่วนร่วมในการแก้ไขปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม และสามารถดำรงชีวิตอยู่อย่างประสานสอดคล้องกับธรรมชาติได้ ดังนั้นเพื่อให้เกิดความสมดุลระหว่างการอนุรักษ์และการพัฒนาจึงได้เกิดรูปแบบของการท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ (Ecotourism) ขึ้นโดยมีรูปแบบการท่องเที่ยวอย่างมีความรับผิดชอบ ในแหล่งธรรมชาติที่มีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะถิ่นนั้นๆ และแหล่งวัฒนธรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับระบบนิเวศสิ่งแวดล้อมในพื้นที่ โดยมีกระบวนการเรียนรู้ร่วมกันของผู้ที่เกี่ยวข้อง ภายใต้การจัดการการท่องเที่ยวอย่างมีส่วนร่วมของประชาชนในท้องถิ่นเพื่อให้ตระหนักถึงคุณค่าต่อการรักษาความสมดุลของระบบนิเวศ และก่อให้เกิดประโยชน์สูงสุดต่อประชาชนในท้องถิ่น (สถาบันวิจัยวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีแห่งประเทศไทย, 2541 : 4) การท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศจึงเป็นนโยบายและแนวทางที่การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย ผลักดันให้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการท่องเที่ยวที่ต้องมีการพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืน ตามวิสัยทัศน์ในการพัฒนาการท่องเที่ยวที่ส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวที่มีคุณภาพไม่เกิดผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม เสริมสร้างจิตสำนึกในการอนุรักษ์ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม โดยมีการจัดการสิ่งแวดล้อมภายใต้การมีส่วนร่วมของประชาชนในท้องถิ่น
