ทฤษฏีของ Maslow จำแนกความต้องการของคนออกเป็นลำดับขั้น 5 ขั้น ซึ่งแม้ว่าปัจจุบันเราจะไม่เชื่อแล้วว่าคนเรามีความต้องการเรียงไปตามลำดับขั้น เราสามารถต้องการหลายขั้นไปพร้อมๆกันเลยก็ได้ แต่ทฤษฏีนี้ก็ได้เผยให้เห็นถึงความจริงที่ว่าความสุขของมนุษย์นั้นเกี่ยวข้องกับการตอบสนองความต้องการ
