ประวัติการปลูกยางพาราของประเทศไทย



ต้นยางพาราเข้ามาปลูกในประเทศไทยตั้งแต่สมัยที่ยังใช้ชื่อว่า “สยาม” ประมาณกันว่าควรเป็นหลัง พ.ศ. 2425 ซึ่งช่วงนั้นได้มีการขยายเมล็ดกล้ายางพารา จากพันธุ์ 22 ต้นนำไปปลูกในประเทศต่างๆ ของทวีปเอเชีย และมีหลักฐานเด่นชัดว่า เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2442 พระยารัษฎานุประดิษฐ์มหิศรภักดี (คอซิมบี้ ณ ระนอง) ได้นำต้นยางพาราต้นแรกของประเทศมาปลูกที่อำเภอกันตัง จังหวัดตรัง จึงได้รับเกียรติว่าเป็น “บิดาแห่งยาง” จากนั้นพระยารัษฎา-นุประดิษฐ์ ได้ส่งคนไปเรียนวิธีปลูกยางพาราเพื่อมาสอนประชาชนพร้อมนำพันธุ์ยางพาราไปแจกจ่าย และส่งเสริมให้ราษฎรปลูกทั่วไป ซึ่งในยุคนั้นอาจกล่าวได้ว่าเป็นยุคตื่นยางพาราและชาวบ้านเรียกยางพารานี้ว่า “ยางเทศา” ต่อมาราษฎรได้นำเข้ามาปลูกเป็นสวนยางพารามากขึ้น และได้มีการขยายพื้นที่ปลูกยางพาราไปในจังหวัดภาคใต้รวม 14 จังหวัด ตั้งแต่จังหวัดชุมพรลงไปถึงจังหวัดที่ติดชายแดนประเทศมาเลเซีย การพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมยางพาราของประเทศได้เจริญรุดหน้าเรื่อยมาจนทำให้ประเทศไทยเป็นประเทศที่ผลิตและส่งออกยางพาราได้มากที่สุดในโลก
พ.ศ. 2444 พระสถลสถานพิทักษ์ ได้นำกล้ายางพารามาจากประเทศอินโดเซีย โดยปลูกไว้ที่บริเวณหน้าบ้านพักที่อำเภอกันตัง จังหวัดตรัง ซึ่งปัจจุบันนี้ยังเหลือให้เห็นเป็นหลักฐานเพียงต้นเดียวอยู่บริเวณหน้าสหกรณ์การเกษตรกันตัง และจากยางรุ่นแรกนี้ พระสถลสถานพิทักษ์ ได้ขยายเนื้อที่ปลูกออกไป จนมีเนื้อที่ปลูกประมาณ 45 ไร่ นับได้ว่า พระสถลสถานพิทักษ์คือผู้เป็นเจ้าของสวนยางคนแรกของประเทศไทย
