ผู้ที่จะประกอบอาชีพนี้ ควรเตรียมความพร้อมดังต่อไปนี้
เมื่อสำเร็จการศึกษาในหลักสูตรมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้น
จะต้องเลือกเรียน/ศึกษาต่อในระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย (สายวิทยาศาสตร์) จากนั้นจึงจะทำการสอบ
คัดเลือกเข้าศึกษาต่อในสาขาวิชาพยาบาล
ของมหาวิทยาลัยต่างๆ ที่สังกัดทบวงมหาวิทยาลัยหรือมหาวิทยาลัยเอกชน ทั้งนี้การศึกษาในระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายจะต้องมีผลการเรียนวิชาฟิสิกส์ เคมีชีววิทยา ค่อนข้างดีด้วย

คุณสมบัติของผู้ประกอบอาชีพ
ผู้ประกอบอาชีพนี้ ต้องมีคุณสมบัติ ดังนี้

1. สำเร็จการศึกษา พยาบาลศาสตร์ต่อเนื่อง หรือพยาบาลศาสตร์

2. มีสุขภาพสมบูรณ์ ทั้งร่างกายและจิตใจ ไม่พิการหรือทุพพลภาพ ปราศจากโรค ซึ่งอาจจะเป็นอุปสรรคต่อการปฏิบัติงาน

3. มีจิตใจเอื้อเฟื้อเผื่อแผ่ ไม่รังเกียจผู้เจ็บป่วย
มีความเมตตา และมีมนุษยสัมพันธ์ที่ดี

ลักษณะของงานที่ทำ
รักษา ดูแล และให้คำแนะนำเกี่ยวกับการพยาบาล เป็นผู้ช่วยแพทย์ โดยการสังเกต และบันทึกความเปลี่ยนแปลงในคนไข้ รายงานให้แพทย์ทราบถึงอาการของคนไข้ ตามลักษณะของโรคนั้นๆ
