ในพื้นที่ป่าดูนลำพัน ตำบลนาเชือก อำเภอนาเชือก จังหวัดมหาสารคาม
ภายหลังได้ขอพระราชทานชื่อว่า "ปูทูลกระหม่อม"
ซึ่งเป็นพื้นที่แห่งเดียวที่พบปูชนิดนี้ ดังนั้นเพื่อเป็นการอนุรักษ์ผืนป่าดูนลำพันแห่งนี้
ตลอดจนทรัพยากรป่าไม้และสัตว์ป่ารวมทั้งเพื่อเป็นการป้องกันภัยคุกคาม
และปัญหาการบุกรุกพื้นที่และระบบนิเวศ ซึ่งจะส่งผลให้ปูทูลกระหม่อมสูญพันธุ์ได้
ทางจังหวัดมหาสารคามและกระทรวงวิทยาศาสตร์และสิ่งแวดล้อมจึงร่วมกัน
พิจารณาประกาศให้พื้นที่ป่าดูนลำพัน เป็นพื้นที่คุ้มครองสิ่งแวดล้อม
โดยออกเป็นประกาศกระทรวงฉบับที่ 7 เมื่อปี พ.ศ.2539
ตามพระราชบัญญัติส่งเสริมและรักษาคุณภาพสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งชาติ พ.ศ.2535

ต่อมากรมป่าไม้โดยส่วนอนุรักษ์สัตว์ป่า สำนักอนุรักษ์ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ
ได้ส่งเจ้าหน้าที่มาสำรวจพบว่านอกจากปูทูลกระหม่อมแล้ว
ป่าดูนลำพันแห่งนี้ยังมีความหลากหลายทางธรรมชาติ ทั้งพืชพันธุ์และสัตว์ป่า
จึงได้ดำเนินการเสนอต่อกระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์และได้มีประกาศกระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์
เมื่อวันที่ 20 มกราคม พ.ศ.2541 โดยนายปองพล อดิเรกสาร
รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ กำหนดให้พื้นที่สาธารณประโยชน์ป่าดูนลำพัน
ในท้องที่ตำบลนาเชือก อำเภอนาเชือก จังหวัดมหาสารคาม
ให้เป็นเขตห้ามล่าสัตว์ป่าดูนลำพันตามพระราชบัญญัติสงวนและคุ้มครองสัตว์ป่า พ.ศ.2535
ตามประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่มที่ 116 ตอนพิเศษ 40ง ลงวันที่ 14 มิถุนายน พ.ศ.2542
