การเตรียมความพร้อมในการพัฒนาบุคลากรวิชาชีพท่องเที่ยว เพื่อรองรับการเปิดประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน (AEC)ประเทศไทย ในฐานะผู้ประสานงาน (Country Coordinator) สาขาการท่องเที่ยว โดยกระทรวงการท่องเที่ยวและกีฬาเป็นหน่วยงานที่มีภารกิจดำเนินการตามพันธะข้อตกลงระหว่างประเทศและแผนการรวมกลุ่มเศรษฐกิจสาขาการท่องเที่ยวในกลุ่มประเทศอาเซียน ให้เป็นมาตรฐานเดียวกัน ได้จัดทำข้อตกลงร่วมว่าด้วยการยอมรับคุณสมบัติบุคลากรวิชาชีพท่องเที่ยวอาเซียน (ASEAN Mutual Recognition arrangement on Tourism Professionals : ASEAN MRA-TP) เพื่ออำนวยความสะดวกในการเคลื่อนย้ายผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพการท่องเที่ยวในอาเซียนและแลกเปลี่ยนข้อมูลและแนวทางปฏิบัติที่ดีที่สุด

ข้อตกลงนี้จะเป็นการเตรียมความพร้อมให้กับบุคลากรวิชาชีพของไทยในการเตรียมตัวเข้าสู่ประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียน โดยมีคณะกรรมการวิชาชีพท่องเที่ยวแห่งชาติและคณะกรรมการรับรองคุณวุฒิวิชาชีพท่องเที่ยวทำหน้าที่กำกับว่าผู้นั้นได้ปฏิบัติตามข้อกำหนดที่ระบุไว้ในมาตรฐานสมรรถนะร่วมสำหรับนักวิชาชีพการท่องเที่ยวอาเซียน

ทั้งนี้ สิทธิในการประกอบวิชาชีพในประเทศผู้รับจะอยู่ภายใต้เงื่อนไขของกฎหมายและข้อบังคับของประเทศผู้รับ โดยกำหนดหลักสูตรการท่องเที่ยวแห่งอาเซียนสำหรับ 2 สาขา 6 แผนก 32 ตำแหน่งงาน ดังนี้
