กะเหรี่ยงที่พบในประเทศไทยแบ่งออกเป็นกลุ่มย่อยตามลักษณะภาษาและความเป็นอยู่ได้ 4 กลุ่ม ได้แก่

กะเหรี่ยงสะกอ (Sgaw Karen )

คนไทยในภาคเหนือเรียกกะเหรี่ยงสะกอว่า “ยางขาว” นอกจากนี้ ยังมีคำอื่นที่ใช้เรียกกะเหรี่ยงสะกอ ได้แก่ “ยางกะเลอ ยางป่า ยางเปียง” กะเหรี่ยงสะกอเรียกตัวเองว่า “ปากะญอ” เป็นกะเหรี่ยงที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศไทย มีจำนวนประชากรประมาณ 500,000 คน (ประวิตร โพธิอาศน์ 2527) อาศัยอยู่ในจังหวัดตาก จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ จังหวัดเชียงราย จังหวัดกาญจนบุรี จังหวัดราชบุรี เป็นต้น

กะเหรี่ยงโป (Pwo Karen )

คนไทยในภาคเหนือเรียกกะเหรี่ยงโปว่า “ พล่อ “ หรือ “ โพล่ง ” บ้างก็เรียกว่า “ยางเด้าะแด้ ยางบ้าน “ กะเหรี่ยงโปมีจำนวนประชากรเป็นที่สองรองจากกะเหรี่ยงสะกอ คือประมาณ 70,000คน (ศูนย์วิจัยชาวเขา 2526) อาศัยอยู่แถบจังหวัดเชียงราย เชียงใหม่ แม่ฮ่องสอน ลำพูน ลำปาง ลำปาง แพร่ ตาก อุทัยธานี กาญจนบุรี ราชบุรี เพชรบุรี และประจวบคีรีขันธ์ (พจนารถ เสมอมิตร 2526) คนส่วนมากมักเข้าใจว่ากะเหรี่ยงสะกออาศัยอยู่เฉพาะทางภาคเหนือ และกะเหรี่ยงโปอาศัยอยู่เฉพาะทางภาคตะวันตกเท่านั้น แต่แท้ที่จริงแล้วจะพบกะเหรี่ยงทั้งสองกลุ่มอยู่ในจังหวัดเดียวกัน แต่แยกหมู่บ้านไม่ปะปนกัน เช่น ในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ มีทั้งกะเหรี่ยงสะกอและกะเหรี่ยงโป โดยกะเหรี่ยงสะกอมีมากที่อำเภอแม่แจ่ม และกะเหรี่ยงโปมีมากที่อำเภออมก๋อย นอกจากนี้ในจังหวัดลำพูนซึ่งอยู่ในภาคเหนือกลับมากะเหรี่ยงโปอาศัยอยู่หนาแน่น โดยเฉพาะที่อำเภอลี้ ทางภาคตะวันตกมีกะเหรี่ยงโปอาศัยอยู่หนาแน่นก็จริง แต่ก็พบกะเหรี่ยงสะกอที่จังหวัดกาญจนบุรีเช่นกัน (สุริยา รัตนกุล และคณะ 2529)

กะเหรี่ยงคะยา (Kayah Karen), แบร (Bre ) หรือ บเว (Bwe)

คนไทยภาคเหนือและไทยใหญ่เรียกเรียกกะเหรี่ยงคะยาว่า “ ยางแดง ” ตามการแต่งกายของหญิงที่แต่งงานแล้วซึ่งนิยมใส่เสื้อและนุ่งซิ่นซึ่งทอแซมด้วยสีแดง (สำนักงานเลขานุการคณะกรรมการปฏิบัติการทางจิตวิทยาแห่งชาติ 2518)

พม่าและไทยใหญ่เรียกชนกลุ่มนี้ว่า “ตองสู” ซึ่งหมายถึง “ชาวเขา” (พจนารถ เสมอมิตร 2526) ผู้หญิงกะเหรี่ยงตองสูใส่ชุดสีดำ จึงมีชื่อเรียกในภาษาอังกฤษว่า “BlacK Karen” หรือ “กะเหรี่ยงดำ” กะเหรี่ยงตองสูมีจำนวนประชากรน้อยมากประมาณ 600 คน อาศัยอยู่ในไม่กี่หมู่บ้านในเขตอำเภอเมือง จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน (สุริยา รัตนกุลและคณะ. ปี2529) *หมายเหตุ นอกเหนือจากกะเหรี่ยง 4 กลุ่มที่กล่าวไปแล้วนี้ ยังมีกะเหรี่ยงกลุ่มเล็กๆ ที่เพิ่งเข้ามาอยู่ในประเทศไทย และเป็นที่รู้จักกันดี คือ ปาดอง หรือ กะเหรี่ยงคอยาว และล่าสุดที่ตามหลังปาดองมามีกะยอ หรือ กะเหรี่ยงหูยาว ในงานชิ้นนี้ จะกล่าวเฉพาะกะเหรี่ยงสะกอซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มใหญ่ที่สุด
