เขื่อนภูมิพนธ์เขื่อนภูมิพล เป็นเขื่อนอเนกประสงค์แห่งแรกในประเทศไทย ลักษณะเป็นเขื่อนคอนกรีตรูปโค้ง เริ่มก่อสร้างเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2496 แล้วเสร็จทำพิธีเปิดเมื่อวันที่ 17 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2507 เขื่อนนี้เดิมชื่อ เขื่อนยันฮี พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้พระราชทานพระปรมาภิไธยให้เป็นชื่อเขื่อนว่า เขื่อนภูมิพล เมื่อวันที่ 25 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2500[1]

เขื่อนภูมิพลสร้างปิดกั้นลำน้ำปิง ที่บริเวณเขาแก้ว อำเภอสามเงา จังหวัดตาก มีรัศมีความโค้ง 250 เมตร สูง 154 เมตร ยาว 486 เมตร ความกว้างของสันเขื่อน 6 เมตร อ่างเก็บน้ำสามารถรองรับน้ำได้สูงสุด 13,462 ล้านลูกบาศก์เมตร เขื่อนภูมิพลเป็นเขื่อนโค้งที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับ 8 ของโลก[1]
