การเข้าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของประชาคมอาเซียนอาจทำให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงและผลกระทบทั้งเชิงบวกหรือลบต่อประเทศไทย ซึ่งเราอาจมองสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นเป็นโอกาสหรือภัยคุกคามก็ได้ ทั้งนี้การพัฒนาความรู้และการเตรียมความพร้อมเป็นเงื่อนไขสำคัญของการรับโอกาสและป้องกันภัยคุกคามที่จะเกิดขึ้น หากนับตั้งแต่ตอนนี้ยังมีเวลาอีกประมาณ 3 ปีจึงจะถึงเส้นตายที่จะบรรลุเป้าประสงค์ในการสร้างประชาคมอาเซียนในวันที่ 31 ธันวาคม 2558 ซึ่งถือว่ามากเพียงพอและยังไม่สายเกินไปที่จะเริ่มต้น
