ความเป็นมาของโครงการ :

ราษฎรตําบลท่างิ้ว ตําบลหนองช้างแล่น และตําบลห้วยนาง ได้มีหนังสือของพระราชทานสร้างอ่างเก็บน้ำและระบบส่งน้ำ เมื่อวันที่ 25 กันยายน 2532 ต่อมาสํานักราชเลขาธิการได้มีหนังสือที่ รล 0005/3231 ลงวันที่ 2 มีนาคม 2533 แจ้งกรม ฯ ว่าได้นําความกราบบังคมทูลพระกรุณาทราบฝ่าละอองธุลีพระบาทแล้วโปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อม ให้รับโครงการอ่างเก็บน้ำคลองท่างิ้วไว้เป็นโครงการอันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดําริ

ที่ตั้งของโครงการ :

หัวเขื่อนคลองท่างิ้ว ตั้งอยู่บนคลองท่างิ้ว ในเขตตําบลคลองท่างิ้ว อําเภอห้วยยอด จังหวัดตรัง

ระยะเวลาก่อสร้าง 7 ปี (2537 – 2543) ขนาดความจุ 18.50 ล้านลูกบาศก์เมตร

วัตถุประสงค์ :

1. เพื่อใช้เป็นแหล่งเก็บกักน้ำ ต้นน้ำบริเวณหุบเขาควนหินแก้ว เหนือน้ำตกหลาด่าน สําหรับเป็นแหล่งน้ำต้นทุนไว้ทําการเกษตรกรรม พื้นที่ประมาณ 12,700 ไร่ ฤดูแล้งและภาวะขาดแคลนน้ำในฤดูฝน หรือในระยะฝนทิ้งช่วงของฤดูกาลเพาะปลูกบริเวณที่ราบ ตําบลท่างิ้ว ตําบลหนองช้างแล่น และ ตําบลห้วยนาง ให้สามารถประกอบการเกษตรกรรมได้อย่างต่อเนื่องตลอดฤดูกาลของการเพาะปลูก

2. เพื่อใช้เป็นแหล่งเก็บกักน้ำ สําหรับการอุปโภค – บริโภค ในฤดูแล้งหรือช่วงที่ราษฎรประสบปัญหาความเดือดร้อนเนื่องจากขาดแคลนน้ำประมาณ 22 หมู่บ้าน ใน 3 ตําบล ดังกล่าวข้างต้น และตําบลใกล้เคียงที่สามารถช่วยเหลือได้

3. เพื่อยกฐานะความเป็นอยู่ของราษฎรในพื้นที่ ที่ได้รับประโยชน์จากโครงการ ฯ ให้ดีขึ้นโดยการสนับสนุนแหล่งน้ำ ซึ่งเป็นปัจจัยพื้นฐานของผลผลิตทางด้านการเกษตรกรรม อุตสาหกรรมท่องเที่ยว ฯลฯ

4. เพื่อเพิ่มความอุดมสมบูรณ์ของป่าไม้ต้นน้ำ โดยมีปริมาณน้ำในอ่างเก็บน้ำสามารถยกระดับน้ำใต้ดินบริเวณป่าไม้ต้นน้ำ คงความชุ่มชื้นของทรัพยากรป่าไม้ธรรมชาติไว้
