ชิงเปรต เป็นประเพณีของภาคใต้ที่ทำกันในวันสารทเดือนสิบ เป็นประเพณีที่ดำรงอยู่บนความเชื่อของการนับถือผีบรรพบุรุษผู้ล่วงลับ[1]ไปแล้วหากยังมีบาปอยู่จะกลายเป็นเปรตในนรกปีหนึ่งจะถูกปล่อยให้มาเมืองมนุษย์ 15 วัน โดยมาในวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 10 ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นวัน "รับเปรต" หรือวันสารทเล็ก ลูกหลานต้องเตรียมขนมมาเลี้ยงดูให้อิ่มหมีพีมันและฝากกลับเมืองเปรตในวันแรม 15 ค่ำ เดือน 10 นั่นคือวันส่งเปรตกลับคืนเมืองเรียกกันว่าวันสารทใหญ่[2]
