p-value คือ ความน่าจะเป็นที่จะได้ค่าสังเกต (สำหรับประชากร 1 กลุ่ม) หรือ ค่าความแตกต่าง (ระหว่างกลุ่มของประชากร) นั้น ๆ โดยมีเงื่อนไขว่า null hypothesis นั้นถูกต้อง (ตรงนี้จะเห็นชัดเจนว่าเป็น conditional probability)
