คุณสุรางคณา วายุภาพ ผู้อำนวยการสำนักงานพัฒนาธุรกรรมทางอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (องค์การมหาชน) หรือ สพธอ.เปิดเผยผลการสำรวจพฤติกรรมผู้ใช้อินเทอร์เน็ตในประเทศไทย ปี 2557 โดยปีนี้เป็นปีแรกที่มีการสำรวจพฤติกรรมการใช้อินเทอร์เน็ตของเพศที่สาม นอกเหนือจากแพศชายและเพศหญิง ด้วยเหตุผลที่ว่างานสำรวจที่ผ่านมาของหลายๆ สำนัก ยังไม่มีการจัดเก็บข้อมูลของเพศที่สามอย่างชัดเจน ซึ่ง สพธอ. เล็งเห็นว่าหากมีการจำแนกเพศให้สอดคล้องกับความเป็นจริงในปัจจุบันจะทำให้ได้ผลการสำรวจที่เป็นประโยชน์ต่อภาคธุรกิจในการที่จะผลิตสินค้าและบริการได้ตรงกับความต้องการของผู้บริโภคมากยิ่งขึ้น รวมไปถึงการทำตลาดเฉพาะส่วน (niche market) หรือกำหนดช่องทางการขายสินค้าเฉพาะกลุ่มได้ตรงกับกลุ่มเป้าหมายยิ่งขึ้น

การสำรวจครั้งนี้เป็นการสำรวจทางอินเทอร์เน็ต โดยทาง สพธอ. ได้เริ่มวางแบบสำรวจบนเว็บไซต์ต่างๆ และเครือข่ายสังคมออนไลน์ ตั้งแต่กลางเดือนเมษายน จนถึงสิ้นเดือนพฤษภาคม 2557 มีผู้ใช้งานอินเทอร์เน็ตสนใจเข้ามาตอบแบบสำรวจทั้งสิ้น 16, 596 คน แบ่งออกเป็น เพศหญิง ร้อยละ 56 เพศชาย ร้อยละ 43.1 และเพศที่สาม เพียงร้อยละ 1.3 เท่านั้น โดยสามารถแบ่งภาพรวมของการสำรวจออกเป็นประเด็นต่างๆ ดังนี้

จากผลการสำรวจครั้งนี้ พบว่า ค่าเฉลี่ยของการใช้อินเทอร์เน็ตต่อสัปดาห์เพิ่มสูงขึ้นจากการใช้งานโดยเฉลี่ย 32.3 ชั่วโมงต่อสัปดาห์ หรือประมาณ 4.6 ชั่วโมงต่อวัน ในปี 2556 เพิ่มขึ้นเป็น 50.4 ชั่วโมงต่อสัปดาห์ หรือใช้เวลาประมาณ 7.2 ชั่วโมงต่อวัน หรืออาจจะกล่าวได้ว่า ปัจจุบันนี้คนใช้เวลาเกือบ 1 ใน 3 ของวันเพื่อใช้งานอินเทอร์เน็ต นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า “กลุ่มเพศที่สาม” มีจำนวนค่าเฉลี่ยชั่วโมงการใช้งานอินเทอร์เน็ตสูงที่สุด อยู่ที่ 62.1 ชั่วโมงต่อสัปดาห์
